Awesome book. While I don't work in the medical ...

Awesome book. While I don't work in the medical field, I read this on a referral. I have many years as an engineering manager in a major oil and gas corporation. I have read many books on the subject of leadership and have with worked with many personal leadership coaches over the years.

As compared to other books I've read on leadership, this book is crisply written and the messages are very efficiently delivered. I've found many books on this subject to be repetitious and unnecessarily dependent on complex multi-step procedures..to the point where I would move on. This book is written at the level of principles that quickly resonated with my own situation, in a way that I'm likely to retain without having to refer back to the "text book" for guidance.

While written in the context of a medical practice, every concept in this book is universally applicable. Even the examples were easy for me to translate and extrapolate into my own work environment. The concepts resonated for me and my own experiences. I could see areas where I was already competent, and these were reinforced, and areas where I can re-examine my approaches or to remember approaches that I had forgotten or grown lax in.

I particularly liked the way common leadership mistakes are prominently sprinkled throughout the book. I also particularly liked the emphasis on personal coaching skills to elevate the capabilities of the people that work for us ..I would challenge any leader, whether it be through influence or through org chart status, to not find areas where changes in our own approaches can dramatically change the course of struggles and challenges in our own situations.

A must read for medical professionals.

If you have ever worked in the medical field, this book is for you. I have worked in various outpatient clinics throughout the years and have seen, first hand, both the triumphs of great leadership and the pitfalls of leadership gone awry--as well as the subsequent fall out upon the employee culture and patient care.
There are FEW books each year that are published that actually provide concrete and sound advice with STEPS that one must take to achieve SPECIFIC goals. There are so many cheerleader, you can do it, have a positive attitude, rah rah rah books out there....This book is not one of THOSE books. This book is UNIQUE in that the advice, examples, and steps taken come out of years of actual success in the medical field. The information comes from two very successful professionals who have not only taken these steps, but have witnessed unprecedented growth and patient satisfaction happen in an actual Medical Practice/Group. They didn't need to write this book because their businesses weren't doing well--they wrote this book to share information with Medical Professionals so that they can not only become a competent leader, but also so that they can improve office culture, patient care, and ultimately the lives everyone involved.
I am very impressed by this book. It is practical and easy to read.
I am already implementing policies based on the information I have gleaned.
This is a book that is worth your time. And while it is not an expensive purchase--we all know that time is money.

Great book for physicians and physician leadership programs!

As a doctor who works to help other doctors who are burned out and weary of “being a doctor”, I interact with many physicians who want to better understand how to lead within their own practices or within health systems. We learn a lot in medical school but leadership is implied more than taught. In this book Suzan, an executive coach and Scott, a physician, use their own experiences to provide a practical guide for others within healthcare. Purposefully examining how one relates to others and then engages those around them is one of the highlights of this book. That’s because the new healthcare environment is based on collaboration, teamwork and value based care, measured by outcomes. The ramifications of the new environment are that reimbursement and personal fulfillment in one’s own work and career will be driven by knowing how to authentically relate to others and get those around you motivated.

The best way to approach this book is to do what the authors suggest and glance through it, pick out what resonates for you and work on applying it. I found that reading certain chapters helped put context around the topic rather than just picking out paragraphs here and there.

Physicians and physician leadership programs should benefit greatly from this book. Scott describes his transformation and how he felt threatened and annoyed at first as he was forced out of his comfort zone. A product of the medical education system, it took some time to overcome the linear, rational and sometimes detrimental perspective he had. But by doing so, he describes how he was successful in achieving more than he thought would be possible in his practice, career and life.
