The ONLY way to learn guitar chords

The is by far the BEST way to learn, construct, and understand how chords work. There are many chord books out there and in my experience, they are nothing more the an encyclopedia of chords. As a victim of these encyclopedias, I felt very overwhelmed and actually lost interest in the guitar. The reality is, this is by far the WORST way to learn guitar chords. If you are learning guitar chords and feel overwhelmed by learning chords from an encyclopedia, do yourself a favor, return it and by this book now! The book explains chords using intervals. For example, a Cmaj7 chord consists of the notes C - E - G - B and converted into intervals is R - 3 - 5 - 7. The book explains where these intervals are on the fretboard and how to change the Cmaj7 to a Cmin7 is as simple as lowering the 3rd a the 7th (from the maj7 example above) a 1/2 and there is your Cmin7. The book also shows the "grip" of the chords so you have a visual. Joseph also explains substitutions, dominant chords, minor 7 flat five, what chord tones can be omitted (I know I'm missing something). I have other learning material from Joseph and I must say his are the BEST learning materials I have come across. I look forward to going through part 2.

A great introduction to understanding, creating and playing 'grown up' chords.

I have bought Guitar Chords in Context Part One: Construction and Application: Volume 1 by Mr. Joseph Alexander and have been slowly working my way through it. I have found it to be extremely well written. The layout is logical. It takes the reader, step by step, through the fundamentals of jazz chords, building the reader’s knowledge step by step and reinforcing it at salient points along the way. The reader is taken through chord types and formulae before being led through 3 different voicings for each of the chords. To give the reader some idea of what the various chords and phrases sound like when played properly there are audio examples provided. The audio examples, which are a free download, are top quality and easily do the job they have been created to do. With any musical instrument tuition the student must put the study and practice in to achieve results. Guitar tuition books which are dry and dull make it hard to keep a reader’s interest going. There are plenty of those around. I am happy to report that this is not the case in this instance I have found this book to be written in a friendly style which is easy to understand and makes learning fun. I am so impressed with it that I have also bought the follow up book Jazz Guitar Chord Mastery. Although I will not start working through it until I have completed my current project I am definitely looking forward to starting it.

FINALLY! A book that I can relate to as I move into jazz guitar

I am happy to have finally found a book that explains the chords I need to get started with jazz guitar. Mr. Alexander explains the chord construction simply and succinctly, and shows how all chords can be reduced to four basic types. I have only just begun to study this book, but I can already see that it will be a huge benefit to me. I am an intermediate level guitar player, but I still stumble with a few basics, and this book starts at exactly the level I need. It is not for an absolute beginner, though.
