Seth’s gentle manner and passionate lovemaking bring Bilal more joy than he ever thought possible. Yet, despite the lovers’ growing happiness, Bilal’s haunted by guilt and shame left over from his strict upbringing, and the sad realization that he’ll never see his family in Iran again. Speaking of families, it’s time for Bilal to meet Seth’s… Eric, Nick and Ally. Ten years later, this committed triad is still as deeply in love as ever, but even commitment comes with challenges… Is there room in this non-traditional family for Bilal? His future with Seth may depend on it.

great characters!
By Jacob Dreiling
Totally honest: I had no idea who the Courtlands were before I read the book. I had no connection to them, but I was able to pick it up as the book went along. The characterizations were rich, the author clearly loves them, and it shows. I was rooting for Seth and Bilal from the beginning, and while I was hoping for a little more adversity for them, I'm sure it will come in later books.
A bit of warning: there is virtually no sex in this book, which I wasn't expecting. I've read other books by Ms Grant and I'm usually pleased with the temperature level, but this one was lacking in that department. Also, as I said, I wasn't aware of the Courtlands, so I was unprepared for them. It's not my thing, but I was willing to go along for the ride because of how well-defined the characters are in this book. Obviously this comes from how much time she's spent with them before.

New Direction For The Next Generation
By Daniel Bowen
I picked up the novella 'In From The Cold' and enjoyed it so much I went ahead and bought this book 'A Year in the Life'. Of course I had no idea that novella would be in this book. . . But anyway. . .
'In From The Cold' highlighted the differences of being foreign born, specifically Iranian. There was everything from the generosity towards those less fortunate, the food taboos such as bacon, brief refences to Ramadan and daily prayer which is facing the east, towards Mecca, five times a day. Having friends that lived in Saudi I'm familiar with all that and Cat Grant did an excellent job pointing them out. The differences in Bilal's background is so different from Seth's. Not just being gay and how that's viewed but how Bilal is judged while on campus by the color of his skin, his name, and his nationality. So it's not just reading about gay romance, it's a cultural clash from Bilal overcoming his heritage in a foreign environment.
So yes I enjoyed the novella which begins this story. Then comes the holiday season and a deeper commitment from Bilal and Seth. Those that have read the other Courtland Chronicles will enjoy having Eric, Nick, and Allie taking up a good part of the story. The main nit pick I have is a few instances where Nick's name was in the wrong place or a grammatical error when Nick's name was mentioned. That was unprofessional for such a celebrated series and continuation. Otherwise well done. - Dan's Wife
EDIT: I wanted to add that 'A Year in the Life' brings up MLS. For those that need a reminder, last year was the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' to raise funds for MLS. This is an up to date issue and it was presented very well in this story. Always nice when an author educates as well as tells a story.

A great way to start the new generation. Contemporary M/M romance
By V. Rundell of V's Reads
This novel, an extension of the Courtland stories by this author, weaves a budding interracial M/M romance into the previously-written ménage love story-picking up a decade later from the other books' endings.
Eric, Nick and Allison are a triad. Eric had been a congressman, but retired shortly after his ménage relationship with Nick and Allison was revealed. They have raised two children--Seth, who is Nick's son (with a different woman who has died) and Lizzie, Allison and Eric's daughter. Seth is a college senior, and Lizzie is ten y/o.
Seth has recently become involved with Bilal, an Iranian Muslim who also attends Cornell. The met during a freak blizzard, holed up in Seth's apartment during illness and a power outage. The spark rises between them and Bilal acknowledges his homosexual desires--in private only, because being out would cut him off from his entire family. If he is known as gay he would be executed in Iran--and ex-pats who have been identified as gay have been kidnapped, returned to Iran and executed, so Bilal has very real reasons for not "coming out" even if he and Seth are together privately. There is a novella lead-in (IN FROM THE COLD) which focuses on Seth and Bilal and their budding relationship.
This book opens with Bilal spending Thanksgiving with Seth's unorthodox family. First, he's blown away by how caring everyone is and how open and loving they are. Bilal has little experience with a loving family; his mother died when he was young and his father's a bit of a tyrant. Bilal suspects his father's acrimony may be based on suspicion of Bilal's homosexuality.
Bilal fits in better than expected, and enjoys a weekend where he can openly express himself as a gay man--publicly holding Seth's hand, is a giant leap, and causes Bilal to imagine what lies would be like if he could stay in the US. Meanwhile, life for Eric, Nick, and Allison is about to take a bad turn. Allison is sick, though no one knows how poorly her health is failing for a bit. Much of the triad's chapter concern doctor's visits and fears for her worsening condition.
Back in Ithaca, Bilal's openness disappears. He's more than happy to oblige behind closed doors, and spend his nights at Seth's apartment, but is afraid any public displays will be witnessed by fellow Iranian students, in particular Aziz. Turns out Aziz's family works for the Ministry of Defense, and Bilal has everything to fear about him. Aziz has made a habit of following Bilal, however, and has dutifully reported back home. Fearing for Bilal's life, Seth takes control, sheltering Bilal, while deepening their relationship. I really enjoy their love story, though I wish there had been a bit more smexytimes.
As a first book in a series, I found the relationships to be very compelling and the story to feel real and approachable. The family drama surrounding Allison's illness was well described and genuine. All the viewpoints are well-written, and the story as a whole unfolds easily. I'd definitely read more on the Courtlands, and only wish for a bit more steam to keep the romance going stronger. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
