There's more to good software than well-written code

Some software companies look at design as "that department down the hall that makes things pretty" or a before/after part of the software development process. Having worked in software development for close to 20 years, in a variety of situations, I advise you not to make that mistake.
Without a doubt, the best products I have worked on have had a strong relationship between designers and developers through the entire software development lifecycle. Jackson Fish Market understands how to make this happen successfully, and this book will help you understand how to not just make things good, but truly make them special.

I've followed Hillel and Jenny since they were at Microsoft and naturally I've done so since they started up Jackson Fish Market. They always produce beautiful work and as a designer who looks up to them, I was excited to read their book. It definitely doesn't disappoint. If you are a designer or you employ designers, this is an excellent book to understand their thinking and improve the process. Plus the illustrations are awesome :)

User Experience explained

I had a chance to read Making Things Special after I supported Hillel Cooperman and Jenny Lam's Kickstarter campaign. The book is so great at illuminating what user experience is and how it can add value. There are many great examples of what differentiates user experience from how people usually design. The book is full of wonderful examples and helpful analogies. One of my favorites is their analogy of looking at the value of a birthday cake based on what it costs and how many candles it can hold vs. how the cake tastes. The authors seem to have made a great effort to distinguish between specifications for what you design and how users feel about what you've designed.
The best way I can describe my experience reading the book is I kept saying to myself things like "that's a good point," "that's a good way to say that," "I never thought of it like that," "that's an important thing for people to know about this." No joke.
The future of business is rooted in figuring out what your customers want to be able to do and then designing products and services that help them do those things. Understanding that process is hard enough, doing it is even harder. Considering that, it's reassuring to know that this book exists to help you move wrap your mind around what this is all about.
Best of all, the book itself is well designed. It's short and an easy read. You will feel your time and money were very well spent on "Making Things Special."
