Practical advice for people just starting out
By Heather
There are so many book out there today about starting and maintaining a business. While it’s easy to overload yourself with information (I know I’ve felt like that recently), there’s also something to be said for books that give very clear steps to someone just starting out. You aren’t going to find one magical book that tells you everything you need to know, but you can compile advice from a bunch of people and figure out what works best for you. This book is a short but helpful read that stresses the importance of planning and researching. Yes, start now. But don’t dive in without a plan and don’t stop planning once the ball is rolling.

John-Nwankwo kicks off by telling you her own story, the successful and less-than-successful parts. She isn’t teaching get-rich-quick techniques and hopefully that’s not what you’re looking for. Her story took time and so will yours. But through her experience, readers can see how bumps on the road lead to great revelations and really you can only fail if you stop trying. Business mentors who don’t share their own failures (minor or major) lack credibility and authority. But she tells you in the first pages how she landed on her feet after a less-than-perfect start.

With a medical background, John-Nwankwo uses a five-step process nurses use to treat patients and translates that into steps for building a business. They seem simple and obvious, but it’s amazing how many people fail to follow this plan. Particularly the evaluation part—you can’t put your best foot forward if you don’t make time to figure out why your last step failed or succeeded. And her process isn’t one that you do once and forget. It’s a cycle that you should follow throughout the life of your business. Being a business owner means always learning and looking forward. But it also means looking back and taking lessons from your past.
Through each of the sections, she uses different business types to walk through what she’s teaching. While your chosen profession may not be represented, it’s helpful to see her taking her next step and showing how someone could put it into practice. Talking only in theory can leave readers feeling lost and overwhelmed by ideas. When someone is just starting out, they need a little clearer guidance and that’s what she does in each section. Readers will appreciate the work she put in applying her advice to different businesses and demonstrating how to fully embrace each step. And there are worksheets throughout to encourage readers to interact with the material. She gives a strong outline and then makes sure her audience incorporates it fully.

There is one thing I’d like to see if she releases a new edition: a little tighter formatting. On my Kindle, the book is displayed double-spaced and weird things have happened to the paragraph indentations. There are also graphics that I think were meant to be removed but not all actually were. They aren’t incredibly distracting, but they do mess up the text spacing when they occur. I don’t point this out to deter readers; the content is helpful and after the first few pages, you don’t really notice it. I only point it out so readers don’t have a negative gut reaction after downloading and decide the book isn’t worth their time. Plus, authors can’t test their book every single device when they upload it, so I hope this is seen as helpful and not overly critical.

John-Nwankwo has made a huge change in her own life and I appreciate her work to share what she’s learned with others. The best guides are ones with a story readers can relate to and I feel like there are a lot of people out there that relate to hers. I know it resonates with me and where I am at the moment. Early in the book she lays out her steps and goes into enough detail in each section so readers feel confident that they’re understanding her advice. She doesn’t promise quick and easy results because that’s simply unrealistic. Instead she gives a very simple, practical theory and explains the work required to put that theory into practice.

While I haven’t read any of her other books yet, I suspect each has similar solid advice to share. This book is a nice addition to my business shelf and I don’t believe this will be the only time I read it. If you are launching a business, you should really consider adding this book to your library.

Strategic advice
By Roger
Being a self-employed entrepreneur who has read his fair share of “how to quit your job and become a millionaire” type of books, I approached this book with trepidation.

But, I will admit that after reading it, I find myself quite inspired by its contents. Jane John-Nwankwo gives some very intelligent and strategic advice in this book to all aspiring entrepreneurs.

You may hate your boss, want more vacation time, or not be constrained by a 9 to 5 schedule. Regardless of why you want to be your own boss, read this book. You won’t regret it. I guarantee it.

Easy to follow step by step process
By Darrin
My wife and I have toyed with the idea of starting our own company for years now, and finally have the funding to do so. The main issue up until reading this book was not knowing exactly where to start. The step by step process outlined in this book has taken the guess work out of where to begin. We finally have the confidence we needed, and are currently filling out the legal documentation and looking for an office space. If you are on the fence, this book will help you get the confidence you need. Good luck on your future as a self employed business owner.
