K’Anne Meinel (pronounced Kay Ann My Null), an American author was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and emerged full formed behind a keyboard, sometime in the 1960's, where she still resides today after a seventeen year detour through Southern and Central California on the beach. In 2011 she started her infamous MALICE series including an anti-hero/killer by the name of Alice. Surfs up!

I liked the concept of the story. Ashely falls in love with surfing but is more or less snubbed by the in crowd. She teaches herself mostly by watching and listening to others. Her whole life is surfing and work. Willow has been watching Ashley surf the waves, and as she is coming out of the water to head home to get ready for work, introduces herself. Now you are going to have to read the story to learn what happens next.

It is a short story but an enjoyable read. I think this is one of her longer storys.

I know, you should give a book a chance, but I have tried about eight different times to pick this up. After the first couple of chapters I just can't get any further into it. The grammar, the settings, the believability, the awkwardness, the over-idealistic scenarios... It was too much. It felt like a first draft of a first attempt at writing and I was simply unable to take any enjoyment from it. Now it's "collecting dust" in my kindle archive.

It was an easy read and the charaters were ok but...it was too pat for me, too easy. Wanted more. Three and and a half really. Think Meinel can write, would read her again. Nice inexpensive little time filler.

Total and complete RIP-OFF!!!! Actually the final TWO chapters of the original manuscript! Now---I ask you: Why? Would I want to read.....the END of the book? Ludicrous and larcenous!

Please keep this in mind, that this is 2 chapters of the original work. It's 766 locations in length, so not that long.

That being said, it's an interesting read of the Chinese view of the Opium war. However, I'm not a fan of the translator having changed the text to "omit wearisome portions".

I picked this up when it was free.

About the Author

Howard Spodek received his B.A. degree from Columbia University (1963), majoring in history and specializing in Columbia’s newly designed program in Asian Studies. He received his M.A. (1966) and Ph.D. (1972) from the University of Chicago, majoring in history and specializing in India. His first trip to India was on a Fulbright Fellowship, 1964–66, and he has spent a total of some twelve years studying and teaching in India. He has also traveled widely throughout the United States, Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. He has been a faculty member at Temple University since 1972, appointed Full Professor in 1984. He was awarded Temple’s Great Teacher designation in 1993.

 

Spodek’s work in world history began in 1988 when he became Academic Director of a comprehensive, innovative program working with teachers in the School District

of Philadelphia to improve their knowledge base in world history and facilitate a rewriting of the world-history program in the schools. Immediately following this program, he became principal investigator of a program that brought college professors and high-school teachers together to reconsider, revise, and, in many cases, initiate the teaching of world history in several of the colleges and universities in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. Those projects led directly to the writing of the first edition of the current text (1997).

Needed for a class, but enjoyable to read!

I needed this book for my History of Civilization class but I honestly enjoyed reading through the different chapters even if it was information that I didn't need for my assignments. Its interesting to understand how humans evolved over time, as well as how we find ourselves in similar situations as past civilizations. It was like reading a story book :-)

Landon, his boyfriend of six months is not so… exacting. Landon would rather laze away the morning with some cuddling and some sexing. Trey would rather build a winning snowman. He needs to win.

Trey gets his way. Landon helps. Until…

I have to admit, I know people like Trey, everything having to be in its proper place, all of the time. Pursing my lips at his chosen focus, I continued reading.

And then? Hee! And then?? Snort!! Trey had met his match.

I took a step back. “Frozen pipes are actually a very expensive problem.”

“Why don’t we go to your bedroom and you can check my plumbing?”

G’head, I dare ya’ not to snort while reading about Trey and his Snow David. I dare ya’!

There are so many fantastic one-liners and winning inner thoughts, all filtered through the unexpected guest of Trey’s. I couldn’t get enough, still can’t. I’m fighting against the temptation to share more with you, but you very much deserve to read them for the first time yourself in context. ;)

This is how you tell a short story. This is how you make someone, make me smile. And snort. And giggle, and happily roll my eyes at the word play, including the title. Clever, this is.

We trace the recent evolution of the Federal Reserve’s framework, and use a small-scale macro model and a simple static model to help illuminate the approaches taken with nontraditional monetary policy tools. A number of foreign central banks have made similar innovations in response to similar developments. On balance, the Federal Reserve has moved closer to “flexible inflation targeting,” but the Federal Reserve’s approach differs in important ways from the strict implementation of that paradigm by including a balanced focus on two objectives and the use of a flexible horizon over which policy aims to foster those objectives. Going forward, further changes in central banks’ frameworks may be needed to address issues raised by the financial crisis. For example, some have suggested that the sustained period at the effective lower bound points to the need for central banks to establish a different policy objective, such as a higher inflation target or nominal GDP targeting. We use our small-scale model of the U.S. economy to examine the potential benefits and costs of such changes. We also discuss the broad issue of how central banks should integrate financial stability policy and monetary policy.

My name is not Rockefeller, or Buffett, nor Jack Welch, all famous business people, who you have most likely heard of at some point in your life. The adventure started in 1982, when times were tough in Europe, and work was very hard to come by. My story is that of an immigrant, who moved up the ladder in corporate America through hard work, and sweat, driven to succeed. Ultimately you, the reader, will be the judge, and decide if my story has any merit: it attempts to give you an overview of the combination of European values, in American business, as it deals with various ways of doing business, ranging from “quality first” to money hungry Wall Street big wigs. You may draw conclusions, what is best, making money over all other things, or trying to be ethical in every way, while making “a buck” along the way. In addition, I attempt to make somewhat of a comparison between, what I grew up with in the Netherlands, and the United States of America. It is my sincere hope, that you decide how to do business in America in the best possible way and it is my hope to motivate those, who are excited about business, whether in hospitality or elsewhere.

Long term view in a short term world.

A excellent explanation of the behind the curtain view of hospitality industry. Robert does a wonderful job of describing his transition of European values and quality to American profitability and bottom line. It is refreshing to see that there are still people in the industry that still believe in not only taking care of your guests, but your employees too. Robert teaches that a longer term view of the business will sustain itself for generations.
