It is July of 67 A.D. The brutal, forty-seven day siege of the rebel stronghold of Jotapata, in Galilee, has ended. The Roman armies of Vespasian destroyed the city and captured the leader of the resistance, Josephus ben Matthias. While being interrogated by the Roman commanding general, Josephus makes a bold prediction; Nero’s reign grows short and, in time, Vespasian himself will rise to become emperor. Intrigued, while also viewing the Jewish general as a great source of intelligence, Vespasian spares his life. He then unleashes a hell storm of fury upon the rest of Galilee and into Judea itself. In Jerusalem, the fall of Jotapata is a tragic loss, with Josephus presumed dead and venerated as a martyr. The moderate government under Hanan ben Hanan is greatly weakened as a result of the defeat, with the various extremists seeking to install their own leaders as head of the Jewish State. The rival zealot factions soon become embroiled in a bitter and extremely violent civil war, oblivious or uncaring about the common enemy that is laying waste to the land. Three thousand miles away, Rome is in a constant state of political turmoil. Vespasian attempts to stay above the fray, intent on finishing off the rebellious zealots, yet with Josephus’ prophetic words ever-echoing in his mind.

About the Author
Multi-time Ancient History best-seller James Mace developed hispassion for history at a young age, and has made Ancient Rome a life'sstudy. He penned the initial draft of his first novel, "Soldier of Rome: The Legionary", as a cathartic means of escapism while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq from 2004 to 2005.
His well received series,"Soldier of Rome - The Artorian Chronicles", is a perennial ancienthistory best-seller, as is his series about The Great Jewish Revolt andthe Year of the Four Emperors. In recent years, he has branched out into other historical eras, having written three books set in the Napoleonic Era, with a series about the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 planned for 2016.

This book was very well written and researched. I have read quite a bit of Roman genre and this book was thoroughly enjoyed. I have also read and enjoyed the previous series The Artorian Chronicles (this being what turned me on to James Mace). That series was also very good. The difference with these is the actual history of the events is much more well known and Mr Mace did a superb job of incorporating non fiction into a work of fiction. I anxiously await book 3 The Fall of Jerusalem. This series is a must read for anyone interested in Roman subject matter as well as the Judean Revolt.

Gripping account of the Roman Empire's struggle with the Jewish Revolt. Provides a timely background to an area still torn by violence and internecine strife. A brutal account of the realities of this area of the world.

Novelization of the Jewish Wars
By Geoffrey Atwater
This volume as well as the first volume are essentially novelizations of "The Jewish Wars" by Josephus, which is wonderful as this is an important yet underserved historical period. I am thrilled that James Mace has undertaken the task of turning these historical events into a story. The best parts deal with activities of the Roman legions and the many bands of religious radicals on the Jewish side. Mace provides fascinating clarity to military tactics, use and disposition of weapons, the military hierarchy, and the daily life of a soldier. The weakest parts are the connecting narratives needed to string the story together. The dialogue of volume two is an improvement over that of volume one, could be stronger.
The larger theme woven through the story describes what happens when bands of religious radicals take up weapons and vie for control of the failed Jewish state. The time period may be the first century in the Christian era, yet we seem to see similar clashes in the modern day Mid East. Mace provides a valuable history lesson along with a rollicking story.
