Like every reader of M/M romances I am more than willing to cut a book some slack about strict believability and consistency for the sake of a passionate interlude.
In this short romance, though, nothing makes sense. Characters behave like overgrown children, plot is just a chain of improbable events and everything feels stiff and contrived, not to mention hurried.

The potential for a great story is there, just missed a little

Ok, so I read a lot of reviews for this and they were fairly negative so I wanted to read it for myself. I got it as a free read, so I had nothing to lose. It wasn't bad. It was filled with the things I love- hot police chief, hot mayor/lawyer/doctor, cute setting, you get my drift. I felt the believe factor was on the low side, but the story was pretty good. Chance Endicott is the police chief of Round River. He has been damaged by marriage to a sadist/jerk. Chance was never into the BDSM scene as a whole, but his ex husband thought of himself as a Master. He was so far from that, more a jerk and an evil mean spirited bully. He tore Chance down with emotional abuse until Chance thought of himself as a loser, not good for anything. The only time he didn't feel that way was when he was in uniform. With help from an owner of a BDSM club, Chance eventually got divorced. Everyone loves chance in the small town. The Mayor is stepping down, so he appoints a friend of his from college who is a lawyer/Doctor from Manhattan. His friend Even wants out of the city, so it works for both. Evan meets Chance when he gets to town in a storm and is driving too slow. They hit it off quickly, but Chances self esteem is in need of an overhaul. Evan is more than happy to help Chance and prove to him that he matters and is worthy to be loved. Evan's only secret is that he was a doctor before his father attacked him and tried to kill him. There is some drama when it comes time to meet the families, but some revelations come out of that. When Chances ex tries to get Chance to come back to him because he wants to use him for money, Chance and Evan are attacked and Chance ends up saving Evan's life and Evan ends up ending the ex's. This story may read a little corny, but it is a quick read and parts of it are very cute. It does have potential, the pieces are there and I did enjoy it.

He falls back in to shifter life very easily. He is clan leader

From the blurb I was initially very intrigued about the idea of a mythical, very rare race of Saber Tooth tiger shifters. I wanted to know more about them and their history but also wanted to see what would happen between the two main characters.

Nexhan is a clan leader of a race of saber-tooth cats called, The Rune Fang. He returns to his clan after a self imposed exile. He falls back in to shifter life very easily. He is clan leader, the alpha of his people and he takes on the roll like he hasn’t been gone at all. He is a natural leader and care taker. You know right away that he is nursing some pretty heavy scars but it’s not apparent right away what they are.

Cole is a cougar shifter who is staying with the Rune Fang because he feels like he doesn’t belong with his cougar clan. He feels awkward and clumsy. He also feels like a huge burden and disappointment to his family. He has kept his sexual orientation a secret believing his family would not be able to accept it because they are pushing a mating to a woman that he could never love.

Nexhan and Cole were immediately attracted to each other and while they were exploring their attraction weird things started happening around Cole. I liked this element of the story. I loved how the author made it seem like the plants, animals, and nature would come to life when Cole was around. I really loved finding out how special and unique Cole really was.

I liked the back story of Shairobi but at times it seemed like it was too much back story. For me, I was more confused than enlightened.

Nexhan and Cole were super hot together but I missed the “emotional” aspect of the two. Nexhan was pining over his lost love for about 98% of the story so the love between Cole and Nexhan couldn’t fully blossom like I wanted it too.

With that being said, I still really loved the story. The world that the author describes is enthralling. I will, without a doubt be picking up book #2.

Good, but a lot of spelling mistakes

3.5 Stars.*Contains possible spoilers*

If I was giving stars based solely on the writing style and plot of this novel it would probably get a 4 or a 4.5. It was an interesting story of shifters and not the usual wolf shifters either. The main focus was on a saber tooth like cat called a Rune Fang and a cougar. That in itself was a nice change. Nexhan was a strong alpha. He was dominant, especially during the sex scenes (and there's quite a few of those), but there was only one time he was an ass about it. Nexhan believes that an alpha should serve his people, not the other way around. Cole had his own problems and self-doubts in the beginning and it was nice to see him grow more confident in himself. I really enjoyed the bond among the Rune Fangs and how much they enjoyed each other's company. This novel is more fantasy than contemporary though. I know a lot of shifter books have the main character(s) as shifters, but everything else is modern. However, in this book there is magic and while the Rune Fangs have some technology it seems they rely more on their magic to sustain them and technology is more of a new wonder to them. Some of the characters have ventured out into human civilization, where everything is modern and pretty much set into today's times (though we don't see this, only hear about it). So this is definitely not a historical novel, but the focus is more on nature, magic, and shifters who don't think they are good enough to belong with other shifters for a variety of reasons.

Now to the possible downsides of this book, depending on how you judge a book. There are spelling mistakes everywhere and it got annoying. Usually I can just skim over a few mistakes and not really mind because sometimes they're easy to miss when editing. However, this was ridiculous. One time the word was supposed to be 'yelling', but the word in its place was 'yellowing'. They're not even close to being the same. So if spelling errors really irritate you this book will drive you nuts, which is sad because otherwise this book is written pretty well I think. Another thing that may bother some people, though it didn't bother me. Cole can be arrogant. This is a defense mechanism and Nexhan knows that and Cole isn't always arrogant, but if even slight arrogance in a character annoys you then you probably won't like this book either. So if you want guys to work for their forgiveness then one part of the book may also not make you to happy.

Overall, I liked the fantasy feel of this book and I have always loved books with shifters in them so I enjoyed it; however, I think I could have enjoyed it more if there hadn't been so many spelling errors. There is a sequel, but I'm going to read the excerpt before I purchase.

Nexhan is a clan leader plagued by his past and his sense of failure. Cole is the typical outcast…clumsy, quiet and angry. A chance meeting could heal them both and lead to a startling discovery in this captivating m/m paranormal romance. The author has created a fascinating world filled with some unique shifters and elements that make for a refreshing change. It has touches of otherworldly, divine, mystical and modern all mixed together in a fine tuned blending of worlds to become its own reality hidden within human reality. I was completely enthralled with the story from the very beginning and I feel that it promises to be a fascinating series, so I can’t wait to read the next one and see where it takes me.

Where are the illustrations?

It's difficult for me to get past the lack of illustrations. which separates this from a professionally published book. The author (or ghostwriter) who put this together gives detailed instructions for how to make craft gifts that we can't see in advance. How are we supposed to judge a gift's visual appeal? If the author had originated these designs, it would be a simple thing to snap some photographs and include them. This comes off more as a compilation of holiday crafts from various internet sources. Although there probably is some value to this content, as the gifts sound nice and the instructions look good, I would find some decent ideas with pictures and illustrations via internet search before I'd use the ones presented here.

Arleen Spenceley graduated from the University of South Florida in 2007 with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism, and in 2013 with a master of arts degree in rehabilitation and mental health counseling from the same university. She has also written for Busted Halo, Relate Magazine, and Lifeteen.

Spenceley blogs at arleenspenceley.com about love, relationships, and sex, and about the impact of American culture on Christianity, from a Roman Catholic perspective. In January 2013, she participated in a roundtable discussion of abstinence and virginity on NPR's nationally syndicated radio show Tell Me More. Though she left the Tampa Bay Times in 2012 to finish her master's degree, she returned to the Times staff in October 2013.

A dangerous book

G.K. Chesterton wrote that “the Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.” This pretty much sums Arleen Spenceley’s book on chastity.
Don’t worry, though, she does not berate, shame, or put down. But don’t be fooled, this is a dangerous book: it will challenge you, inspire you… and once you read it, you will never be able to say, “I wish someone had told me.” You’ve been told.
Arleen writes honestly about what it’s been like to live a life of chastity: not easy. However, she also writes about why it’s worth it. She explains why she has pressed in through the difficulties, the put downs, and the incredible meanness of so many who do not understand that the concept of no pain, no gain really does apply to more than sports.
From chapter 7: “… chastity is not supposed to end, ever, not even at marriage.” This book is about much more than being a virgin. It’s about loving and wondering about “what a different world this would be if people were more prepared to be good at marriage than to be good at sex.” (From chapter 2)
So, this book is for you… whether you are single, married, celibate… young or old. If you consider yourself a Christian, and your heart longs for the Christian ideal, this book will help encourage you to believe that you can do it. We can live better lives, love “with upright and undivided lives” if only we choose to aim higher than what passes for fulfillment in modern day culture.
How many of us live our lives as the child C.S Lewis describes when he writes: “We are half-hearted creatures… like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
Arleen helps us imagine the sea, and calls us out of our mud pit.

This Book is for Lovers

Chastity is for Lovers is definitely a book for lovers of all sorts: for those who love others, whether virgins or not, and it's even a book for those who love books. Arleen Spenceley has written a surprisingly engaging, warm and wise, fun and swift-moving tome. I devoured it in one sitting, but will certainly dip back in for seconds and thirds later on. Arleen's skills as a journalist ring out as she starts and peppers each chapter with intriguing real-life stories, some painful, some humorous, and every one of them thought-provoking. She understands and clearly explains the theology behind the chastity; how chastity is a virtue, and the kind of love that it promotes shows itself in the loving way she addresses those in the majority in our culture today who hold such very different views from her own, considering a self-chosen chastity abnormal and psychologically harmful.

How odd that in our modern culture a young woman must be thick-skinned and courageous to proclaim her voluntary virginity in a way that proffers no insults to so many who choose the far more common path (about 49 times more common for American women ages 25 - 44 according to statistics she cites) that leads away from virginity. Young people today need to hear another view of sexuality that does not separate the body from soul and sexuality from love, and we older people need to hear it too. For years I taught Adolescent Psychology to young and middle-aged adults at a public university, and material like this was nowhere to be seen in the textbooks' chapters on adolescent sexuality. Thankfully Arleen has both the thick-skin and the courage that comes from caring to make this pro-life, pro-love, counter-cultural message heard.

This book shares lessons that all of us, regardless of age and of sexual experience or lack thereof, need to learn or relearn, to help heal all the damaged relationships that arise when acts of sexual intimacy are, by implication, considered too trivial and meaningless to care to do them right - with the right person, at the right time, and for the right reasons. No fingers are pointed or shaken at those who hear and live or have lived a different message, but the author does point to another beautiful way to embrace one's sexuality, whether or not one has remained chaste.

Arleen notes at the end that she dreamed about writing a book since she was in the second grade. With Chastity is for Lovers, it seems to me her dream could hardly have more delightfully come true.

A must-read - some of the most important writing I've read on the topic of sex...ever.

Call this your “Sarah said so” must-read for 2014. I laughed, I cried, I pre-ordered two copies for my nieces. This is some of the most important writing I’ve read on the topic of sex…ever. (JP2 might have her beat with TOB, but let’s not get picky.)

Spenceley cuts to the heart of the matter, and she does it with grace, style, and a smile. I found myself crying–and don’t you DARE blame hormones!–because I so wish I had been told this, had read this, had heard this beautiful truth BEFORE NOW. (OK, so I have. But not when I was her age.)

This book is courageous and wise. It’s logical and methodical, even as its softer side is strewn throughout, weaving it together.

Truly, a masterpiece. I couldn’t put it down, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Go forth and buy it for yourself!
