How the Jesuits became the greatest explorers

Scrap whatever you learned about Marco Polo, because whatever he did pales in comparison to these men. Some of the greatest explorers in the world were not soldiers or fortune seekers, but Christian missionaries. The Jesuits went on dangerous and uncharted journeys to spread Christianity, but they ended up becoming the great adventurers, introducing unknown lands to the Europeans.

Matteo Ricci can be credited with being the first European to explore China. Portuguese sailors knew it was there, but Ricci took efforts to learn the language, explore the land, learn the customs, translate the books, and bring all this knowledge back to Europe. He translated the works of Greek mathematicians into Chinese, and brought back translations of Kun Fu Tsu, known in Europe as Confuscius. Based on his work, Italian mapmakers returned 44 years later and created Novus Atlas Sinensis, the first map of China.

The maps are remarkable, not just for the details, but for how extensive they are. The maps show the entire coastline, including Japan, Korea, and Formosa, with accuracy. Next come the rivers and the mountains, which would have been no easy feat for the Italians. These mapmakers were in a land they knew nothing about, cut off from anyone they knew, dependent on their guides, exposed to the elements, and god help them if they got caught near the Yangtzee river when it flooded. Even with the emperor’s men guarding them, they would still have been in danger of attack by bandits.

According to this book, the Italian and German Jesuits were well received in China. There’s a funny story about Johan Adam Schall, the Jesuit mathematician in charge of the mission’s astronomy department. The emperor Shunzhi had lost his father, and saw the white-bearded patriarch as a surrogate parent. The Jesuit’s astronomy skills were in big demand, because accurate calendars were needed, perhaps for the crop planting times. I bet they needed to predict the seasons as well, because rainy seasons would’ve brought China’s infamous floods.

The book touches on the issue of Christian rivalry as well. Ricci began his mission at a time when Catholic and Protestant kings were at war over Europe, and the Jesuit mission to China may have been a way of expanding the influence of Catholic nations, like Portugal and Spain. There is, however, an economic reason for the expedition; the missionaries made the trip on Portuguese boats, and this might have been a way for them to gain a foothold on trade in Asia. By ferrying men and goods to and from China, they could establish a rapport with the empire, gain a monopoly, and outdo their competitors. They could outdo Britain, with her West Indian sugar, and Spain, with her gold from Latin America.

The maps are beautifully reproduced, the writing and research are excellent. Han Qi, a professor at the Chinese Academy of Science, writes how the Kangxi emperor made trips to the west of China, and brought along Jesuit astronomers who taught him how to measure distance. It reminds me of an earlier book I reviewed, titled “How The West Won,” in that it shows how much China learned from Europe. I don’t know how the emperor’s army and tax collectors found their way around, given that all the best mapmakers were Italian. Did they navigate visually? If a road was washed out, how would they identify the landmarks?

I suspect that China’s unique terrain, with its famous mountains, would have had more landmarks with which to navigate. The Italian mapmakers plied their craft for sea captains, who had absolutely no landmarks to tell them where they were. By the time Matteo Ricci came to China, Europe’s Age of Discovery was already 200 years old, and that was plenty of time for the Italians to become experts in maps and navigation. China, however, had no such industry. Their kings weren’t like Henry the Navigator, who used his royal money to finance exploration. The last great Chinese explorer, Zhang He, was long dead and his ships burned. A great opportunity had been wasted, and China would be isolated.

Perhaps this book is really a way to explain why European’s were so successful at colonizing other lands? When “enlightened” rulers make an effort to learn all that is learnable, they can dominate those that do not.

I loved this book! And so do my friends!

First off, I’m a total soap making fanatic since I read this book and used some of the terrific recipes. If you have ever wanted to make your own soap with your own natural and organic ingredients, LeFevre’s book is a must! I really like to know what’s in my soap, and by making it myself, I feel better about using it on my skin. Using the author’s tips and easy to follow instructions, I made such a beautiful batch of soap, I actually gave them away as gifts, and my friends asked where I bought the soap. When I told them I used “Soap Making For Beginners” to make my own soap, they downloaded a copy for themselves. I most HIGHLY recommend this book. I just loved it!

Soap making

This book is full of creative recipes to make melt n pour soap. The title is misleading, I thought I was getting information on how to make real soap. I rated it at 4 stars rather than 5 because honestly.....I do not say this to be mean.......this book is severely lacking in the grammar and writing departments. The directions were spotty at best, with ingredients listed and then completely left out of the recipe.
Not editing the directions for spelling and grammar is not only distracting and annoying, it is unsafe. Invest in spell check.

Great Soap Recipes

This is a great option for those who want to learn how to make some handmade soaps. It starts off with an active table of contents, which is a major plus, allowing for easy navigation through the book. The author's voice shines through within the book, while still presenting the information without any major distractions. Now, the soaps themselves - they seem too be great. I haven't made any yet, but just from the recipes I can tell that they are going to smell really great, while still being quite easy to make.

Superb evaluation of the French Defeat

I keep returning to this book as among the best I've ever read. It is both good reading as military history and failure analysis: no one has been able to write so deftly and originally about why France fell so swiftly in 1940. Unlike other military history books, this one is not heavy on maps nor units nor armament, merely a very incisive and friendly discussion of why France fells so quickly.
Having served during WW1 and serving during WW2, Marc Bloch points to a litany of reasons why the French army, which was better equipted than the Germans, collapsed so suddenly. Despite what I learned in highschool about the French defeat of WW2 (France was overconfident behind the Maginot Line), Marc Bloch tells a different reason. The French army never understood how the speed of modern weapons had shortened space. Marc Bloch, serving at the front in 1940, recalled that the German offensive actually seem to overtake each French retreat: whenever Marc Bloch's unit retreated in 1940, they constantly found the Germans in their rear. The consequence was the French army was in a perpetual retreat and lacked the time to mount a proper counter offensive.
Marc Bloch also points to the cultural factors in the French defeat, namely the French education system which ignored history and visual arts in its cirriculum. He proposes a greater emphasis on both. I agree with the latter: in the US, we are saturated with images but we are visually illiterate. As for history, there is now too much emphasis on history without a comparable attempt to work things out in the present. This is a terrific book that reads like a no-holds barred fight.

Indispensible for Understanding 20th Century France

This slim, unpretentious volume, written at the time events took place, and validated by the author's subsequent death at German's hands, is the best witness account we have of the disintegration of what at the time was regarded the most powerful army in the Allied camp. There is a dry-eyed innocence in the reporting that makes the shattering news it conveys more momentous than anything I have read in more scholarly, more documented, chronicles of the period which overwhelm citizen experience with broader perspectives. This is not to minimize others' works, nor to regard M. Bloch as a "minimalist": au contraire. He was a world-renowned medieval scholar, so his mind was nuanced and perceptive, his approach unsentimental and objective; he brings the full intellectual rigor of his training and experience to extract all possible social, historical, and moral truth from the seemingly mundane. He was in his late forties when the war started but nonetheless, served with honor, very much with his eyes-opened, did his duty in the army and kept his brain functioning throughout rather than putting it on hold in blind patriotism (such a treacherous, over-rated popular paliative). He kept at his craft but rather than delving in ancient manuscripts he reported on what he observed around him of an army, indeed a state, in rapid collapse. The macro waves drowning the country are inferred from his micro observations. Indeed the many treasures come in seemingly casual descriptions of mundane events like millions of naked, flickering, low-wattage light-bulbs adumbrating the tragedy of national collapse. Bloch comes to a melancholic but inherently optimistic conclusion: the future of France will be built not by men of his generation, but by a new breed. How ironic this observation in the midst of the overwhelming propaganda for Petain's phony reactionary, bullying National Revolution and its relatively widespread support (at least in its early stages) in Occupied and Vichy France. This book was written after the defeat and before he joined the Resistance (in whose service he was captured, tortured and killed by the Gestapo). Even in the most abject moments of defeat, I don't think Bloch ever wavered in the belief that the Germans would eventually have to go. Indeed, without regret or melancholy, there seems to have been an absolute faith in the eventual disappearance of the old, pre-popular front, pre-war French order, as much as of French political and military men, as of pre-war French bourgeoisie. The book could have been written by a character in Renoir's 1939 masterpiece "Regle du Jeu." This is real though, and our author a genuine hero. Perhaps it would have been ironically interesting, had he lived, to learn what he would have made of Indochine, Algerie, Gaullism and the heady days of 1968.

For anyone interested in the second world war and French history, this little book is indispensible.

If you'd rather think a bit more deeply, read this classic account by the pioneering medieval historian. Bloch, who lived through the defeat and died fighting with the French resistance, lays out a penetrating analysis of the French defeat. It is vivid, perceptive, beautifully written, and unsparing in its examination of the failures of the generals, the politicians, and the people. It is a thought-provoking cultural critique of a society in a moment of crisis. A classic.

About the Author
Dennis Paul Stradford is a retired business executive currently devoting his time to writing, community service and supporting emerging technology companies. Redeemed and Enlightened is the third novel of a trilogy that began with Blessed and Betrayed and Betrayed and Redeemed published in 2011 and 2013 respectively. Prior to a 36 year career with both public and private high tech companies, he studied to be a Roman Catholic priest. He holds a B.A. in history from San Jose State University and an M.A. and M.Div. from St. Patrick’s University.

disappointing

The whole book felt rushed, like an inconvenience that needed to be done and got out of the way. Very little depth, unlike the first 2. Felt like the entire second half of the book is missing. The biggest shock was turning the page to find no more.

An insightful, practical, and welcomed contribution that transcends the classroom and offers solutions for educators, administrators, parents, and students. This well-researched and documented book builds on numerous psychological and educational theories such at Attribution Theory (Heider), the Growth Mindset (Dweck) and many others, to provide guidance with the many challenges of 21st Century educators. Students experience a transformation in their approach to decision-making when they accept the responsibility for their behavior. Purje provides the means in his book for this momentous occasion to become a reality!

Whats more powerful than a universal truth?

Practical and brilliant. 'How to get it done'. Your life, your future, your reality, you have the power over all of it!
You're also responsible for it!
This is a great read and oh so useful. In twenty years of teaching and coaching, this is the most functional and successful guide to success through personal empowerment I've ever seen.
Best of all, it's simple, unambiguous and consistent.

Teaching everybody, children, athletes, safety professionals, working men and business women these basic tenets is a road map for control of your destiny... the weird thing is the co-operation and unity it brings. Totally unexpected.
This book lays out in simple no nonsense terms the very real fact that you can control your own destiny.
'You control your thoughts and your actions. YOU have that power and you carry that responsibility', simple!
Children especially, grasp this concept and revel in the guidelines set out in Responsibility Theory.

Most philosophies are lost to interpretations, Ragnar's book, is a valuable research document and a no-nonsense guide to a system of self discipline and self control that is accessable to all.
As the book says, "Who has the power?"
You do, It's your responsibility and that's a good thing!
