About the Author
Gary Meredith graduated from Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Later, he earned a Master of Arts in Secondary Education and an advanced degree in Educational Leadership. Gary’s career, as an educator, spanned thirty-five years and included a stop on each rung of the educational ladder. As a resident of Bee Spring, Kentucky, his climb began as a paraprofessional at the high school level. He then became a middle school and high school classroom teacher and basketball coach for nine years before accepting a position as assistant principal and athletic director. He served as an assistant principal and/or athletic director for five years before accepting his first assignment as principal. After serving fourteen years as a principal at the elementary and high school levels in rural Kentucky, he retired from the Kentucky Education System. Gary then moved from the second smallest public school system in Kentucky to the fourth largest in the United States to serve seven years as the Executive Director for Doctors Charter School of Miami Shores, Florida. Doctors Charter School is a combination middle/high school in the Miami-Dade County Public School System and achieved both state and national accolades during Gary’s tenure. The school was recognized as one of the highest achieving public schools in the United States by Newsweek Magazine, US News & World Report, and The Washington Post. The school continued to receive the highest state rating of “A” awarded each year by the Florida Department of Education. Also, the school was named a Gold Seal of Excellence school by the Florida Consortium of Public Charter Schools. Following his retirement from Doctors Charter School, he has continued his passion for assisting others in education by providing specialized educational consulting services to public, private, and charter schools. Gary and his wife, Rhonda, have one son, Brett. Brett and his wife, Heather, just celebrated the newest addition to the family, Jackson Bley.

As an adult, her childhood memories of Tlingit warrior tales would transform into a quest to understand her own connection to a distant people and their history.

In that history, Veselka ultimately found a deeper mystery—that of the Tlingit’s legendary battle against Russian colonizers. In 1804, sailors of the Russian Empire had orders to take Sitka, Alaska—a strategic outpost protected by Tlingit warriors whose bird-beaked helmets and spears had already repelled several Russian expeditions. The Tlingit oral histories of the battle, passed down for hundreds of years, treated it as a victory. But when Veselka began researching it, she learned that the battle had been recorded in Western history as a Russian triumph. How could the two sides have such divergent accounts? And by understanding why, could Veselka find a new connection to the Tlingit herself?

The Fort of Young Saplings is a genre-defying journey into the intersection of personal and geopolitical history, an exploration of how we're shaped by the stories we tell about ourselves—and what happens when those stories shift beneath our feet.

A wonderful sneakily strange work of art disguised as memoir

A wonderful sneakily strange work of art disguised as memoir, as investigative essay, as nothing at all. Midway through you may well decide you've thrown away your money but read to the end. If you're looking for an easy take-away, a strong thesis, bold answers to the questions of the day, that kind of thing -- this is not for you. But if you've ever wished it were possible to write about your best wrong ideas, or about the truth of things you wished were true. If you've ever thought -- isn't the inauthentic just its own kind of authenticity? This is what you were looking for... Not that it discusses abstractions, abstractly, or even much at all. Ms. Veselka relates her odd relationship to the Tlingit Native Alaskans and through this her pursuit of a loopy inconclusive intellectual wild goose chase that uncovers nothing and/or uncovers perhaps the interconnectedness of everything. She does this wittily and yet with a delicate gracious seriousness. This is a writer with the clear eyed discipline to write about seeking connection with a mythic past without being -- well, stupid and sincere, or, and this is the remarkable part, without letting herself off the hook with ironic self-deprecating comedy.

Wonderful and thought-provoking

This is a blend of memoir, history, and an exploration of how we interpret history. The different strands weave together beautifully, and I finished this book both wanting to read more about the history in it and convinced that perhaps I could never really know those stories.

This may deserve a higher rating, but I am just not into Military Strategy and war in general. All the analysis of the strategies and comparisons were lost on me. I didn't understand it, and didn't care to understand it. I found it boring.

For several years I pursued the story (and writing) of John O'Hara (1905-1970), once one of the most popular writers in America. His novels BUTTERFIELD 8, A RAGE TO LIVE, TEN NORTH FREDERICK were among his bestsellers. He also wrote a Broadway hit (PAL JOEY), hundreds of short stories (he remains the writer with the most stories published in the NEW YORKER), a few plays (mostly forgettable), and lots of journalism (he was a columnist for NEWSWEEK, for HOLIDAY, and others). He won some major awards (a National Book Award for TEN NORTH FREDERICK), but today he is largely forgotten. Why? I read all of O'Hara's works, visited sites important in his life, and have come to some conclusions about him and his writing. This brief "biographical memoir" tells the story.

I like it there.

Like sparks from a blacksmith’s anvil Daniel Dyer has thrown glimmers of light into the works and life of John O’Hara. His comments are informed, conversant and relaxed in an informed way. The full blown biographies he has left for others but has given us glances into the writing and the being of Mr. O’Hara. I found traveling with Mr. Dyer in tracking down the places significant in the life the author of such novels as Ten North Frederick and Appointment in Samarra an enjoyable experience.

that he enjoyed reading, since this murder is revealed to be ...

A historical post-WWI mystery that begins in London and moves to the MC's family country home ("The Pile") and environs. Lord Henry (Hal) initially appears to be the flippant upper class "wastrel" described in the blurb, but he, his man Beagle, and Inspector William Sayers do all run deep, and are characters worth caring for. Several side characters are also drawn with more complexity than one might expect from the country home/drawing room scenario that seems to have been set in place, something akin to the mysteries Hal enjoys reading. Or more accurately, that he enjoyed reading, since this murder is revealed to be too personal for that. It takes most of the book for the MCs to come together, but it's worth the wait. There are also some lovingly written descriptions of the countryside and the changing seasons. A few niggles, but overall a strong debut. I hope this one does become a series. 4.5 rounded up.

Delightful

This book was a delight. On the outside Hal is a lord, who follows all the conventions and respectability of his class. But he is also a genuinely kind person and not a bad detective to boot. Despite not being too long the book managed to develop a complex enough mystery and more importantly several fascinating characters. There is a romantic story in the making, which ends as HFN but it is not a romance. I liked it a lot and buying another book by this writer.

Copy editing is a very good thing to do to your manuscript though! If I notice typos, that means other people will note more of them.

good mystery

I was surprised , i actually bought this on a misclick that turned out to be enteraining good mystery and well written story line. I enjoyed the setting in history timeline. and he characters were decent. tho were a few times it felt forced and out of character [ the police officer comes to mind] all the same will try this author again . had minimal "glitches" in my opinion

A real page-turner about true events in WWII

I recently read a book in this series called Allied Generals. It was the second of this series I had read, I went on a purchasing spree after because they are just that good. These are the type of readings you can get lost in, a real page-turner, I have finished them all relatively fast. This one is about the generals who helped lead the allies to victory over the Nazis and Japanese during WWII. Like the last one I read there were several stories I had not heard of.It's crazy that such huge things have happened in world history and they aren't talked about more. It's nice to see a series that shines light on real heroes and the people they had to fight against.

Not only does it outline their defining moments of World War 2, but it also analyzes their backgrounds and motivations that accelerated themselves to their positions. Even the chapter on Dwight Eisenhower brings up other generals he worked with including Patton and MacArthur. For those who are not familiar with military strategy, this set also allows the reader to compare the differences in military strategy and how the generals' upbringing impacted who they became as leaders in this war that was fought so differently than the First World War. From generals trained in the United States to leaders trained in the discipline of the Prussian traditions, these generals are interesting to read about. The two-book box set is a good introduction to some of the generals of World War 2 and is valuable as the collection set.

Great for term papers and history fans!

This book was well written and served as a good lesson of history. I learned a lot from this book, it made me think back to my high school years as well as early college history courses. I found that this applies for term papers as well as supplemental two anybody who is going To major in history. The author really homes in on each side with out hiding or embellishing any part. It was a great read and I look forward to reading the remainder of the box set. It is dense material the value of that for the price it is being sold, I feel is a steal. I have read several books in this series and find that they are all Worth their weight in gold I look forward to reading the next one; since Jenkins breaks down World War II not in one book, like other authors, but in box sets. He caters to each section and every aspect of the war thoroughly.
