Winter fun in pictures and rhymes

Author Kathi Flynn has done a marvelous job with the first book in her "Exploring Seasons" series. The gorgeous color photography and rhyming lines are perfect for the winter season. She even makes ice and snow and subfreezing temperatures look like fun - almost. My compliments especially for the really splendid photography. And don't miss the pop-ups on some pages that give a little factoid or background for the picture.

The little book is only 16 pages, so it's short enough to hold a child's attention during a bedtime reading, and it's a fun read for grown-ups too.

worth many reads

This was a wonderful short and enlightening story filled with fun facts. I had a lot of fun reading it with my children. Finally a fable to teach the values of one's personal meaning and how we affect others. Joe's ability to personify a simple pencil to demonstrate these values was both captivating and imaginative. This story is uniquely written to reach both adults and children. When I closed the book I found myself reflecting on my life too.

Peggy Pencil Meets Five Angels is for people of all ages.

Shortly after reading this book, I was at church listening to a homily about " doing for others.." As the message was being presented, my mind drifted back to Peggy Pencil's journey with the five Angels. The theme of the Pastor's message was totally captured in Mr Sottile's writings. I cannot wait to share Peggy Pencil with my granddaughters.

About the Author

Jacob Abbott (1803–1879) was a native of the state of Maine who was a professor of mathematics and natural philosophy, a minister, and founder of two schools (the Mount Vernon School for Young Ladies in Boston and the Mount Vernon School for Boys, in New York City).

He wrote more than 180 books and became famous for his easy-to-read style of historical storytelling, stripped of the dry dustiness which characterized other texts.

User friendly History

As I began to teach my child ancient history I knew they had to be an easier way than reading dry history books and I found it! Jacob Abbot has written this for children but don't let that put you off. I am using it with my 7th grader and we both love to read it aloud.

History Beautifully Written

This is part of an exceptional series of biographies from the wonderful school of historians of the mid-nineteenth century, in this case by the brothers John and Jacob Abbott. I hope that I will be forgiven for posting this review at various titles I have read.

I would like to quote Abraham Lincoln's letter to the brothers, for it is incredibly powerful.

"I want to thank you and your brother for Abbott's series of Histories. I have not education enough to appreciate the profound works of voluminous historians, and if I had, I have no time to read them. But your series of Histories gives me, in brief compass, just that knowledge of past men and events which I need. I have read them with the greatest interest. To them I am indebted for about all the historical knowledge I have."

Some may be put-off by the oftentimes long background stories, which can get somewhat tangential to the subject. Jacob especially seems prone to this. However, I find the Abbott's bios fascinating even when they get carried away and wander a bit too far from home. As a true history lover, it is hard to loose me.

As for judgments and opinions, yes, the Brother's Abbott give them freely and without reservation. While some will no doubt consider their views dated, please keep in mind that these books were written practically two centuries ago, when people thought very differently. In most cases, however, I find their ideas to be timeless, and in this sense, quite refreshing. If only today's historians could write so passionately and sensitively.

A readable and instructive blend of fact and fiction

Cyrus the Great (c. 600 BC to 530 BC) was the king who ended the Babylonian Empire and established the Persian Empire c.539 BC. According to the Bible (which calls him Darius) he captured the city of Babylon shortly after Belshazzer's Feast to fulfil the "writing on the wall". Jacob Abbott uses the writings of Herodotus (440 BC) and Xenophon (c. 390 BC) to throw some light upon the life and times of Cyrus. The resulting book is highly readable and instructive in places. However it should be remembered that men like Herodotus and Xenophon wrote history to record what was said and what was believed. They did not always let facts get in the way of a good story. In fact they liked nothing more than a good story that would entertain their readers. The other problem, from the point of view of a modern historian, was that written records were scant at that period so Herodotus and Xenophon got much of their information orally from the descendants or Cyrus and his contemporaries. The result is a portrait of Cyrus as a noble, talented, dashing young man who became a wise king and heroic soldier: not really a warts and all account. However the section on the complex relationship between Croesus and Cyrus is interesting and may well contain more than a grain of truth. All in all, bearing in mind that the kindle edition is free, this is a very useful research tool. It is also fairly short. It needs to be read with a degree of scepticism though. Recommended to all students of Middle East ancient history.

It is based on new sources and the results of new theological and historical research. The texts are presented parallel in Early Modern High German and in the Latin original. The critical apparatus reproduces the various readings, and the commentary provides important information for our understanding of both the historical and theological background.

German description: Die Bekenntnisschriften der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche orientieren sich an dem Konkordienbuch von 1580, das die innerprotestantischen Lehrkontroversen der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts befrieden und die Evangelischen - auch auf europäischer Ebene - erneut unter einem gemeinsamen Lehrbestand und Bekenntnis einen wollte. Dazu diente zum einen die durch die Konkordienformel vorgenommene Klärung der theologischen Fragen in Interpretation der Confessio Augustana, zum anderen die Zusammenstellung von Bekenntnissen und theologischen Schriften, die |berwiegend aus der Feder Martin Luthers stammten. Dieses ""Corpus Doctrinae"" bestand aus den drei altkirchlichen Bekenntnissen, der Confessio Augustana invariata und ihrer Apologie, den Schmalkaldischen Artikeln mit dem Tractatus de primatu et potestate papae, dem Kleinen und Grossen Katechismus Luthers, der Konkordienformel und einer Vorrede. Diese Vorrede erläuterte die Entstehungsbedingungen und versuchte letzte Einwände auszuräumen. Sie und damit das gesamte Konkordienwerk wurde von zahlreichen - jedoch nicht von allen - F|rsten und Ständen, unter ihnen die Kurf|rsten von Sachsen, Brandenburg und Pfalz, unterschrieben. Das Konkordienbuch wurde am 25. Juni 1580, dem 50. Jahrestag der Übergabe der Confessio Augustana auf dem Augsburger Reichstag von 1530, veröffentlicht und in den Territorien der Unterzeichner eingef|hrt. Bis heute gilt es in der Form der Bekenntnisschriften der Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche als theologisch massgebliches Referenzwerk des Luthertums in der Welt.

Great new edition of the Book of Concord, Confessions of the Lutheran Church, 1580. This is the new critical/scholarly edition in German with Latin and German texts, but it is not over burdened with historical information as there are two additional volumes available in mostly German to cover that.

What I liked about Dean's writing is that he is not making up these factual anecdotes. He has 900+ footnotes between the two books, many from source documents, showing the real history that is often overlooked by modern historians. His "proof is in the pudding"! "Taking My Country Back" and its companion, "Where Did My Country Go" are vital additions to any history buff's library and for those who care about America.

This author has really done it!! Once I started reading the books, I could not put them down. Intriguing Premise, Great Potential, Doesn't Quite Deliver

The "pumpkin plan" of the title comes from author Mike Michalowicz's encounters with champion pumpkin farmers. The process, he writes, involves planting promising seeds, watering them, and then removing all diseased or damaged pumpkins. "When they grow larger, identify the stronger, faster growing pumpkins. Then, remove all the less promising pumpkins. Repeat until you have one pumpkin on each vine." The farmers then focus all of their attention on the big pumpkin.

It's an arresting image, and Michalowicz does a good job of relating it to a business context. His "pumpkin plan" for business involves getting rid of all of your "bad" clients and focusing the vast majority of your attention on the highest value customers and prospects.

Unfortunately, the book doesn't dig deep enough. The author has a breezy, entertaining style that probably goes over very well in a keynote address or short seminar. But Michalowicz spend so much time and effort trying to come off as a "regular guy" - there is a disconcerting amount of slang and profanity - that he forgets to give the reader enough detail on how the process works - or evidence that it really does. There are a few anecdotes, along with several chapters that end with hypotheticals: "Let's pretend you're in a rock band - playing sort of a throwback to old-school punk rock - with breakout potential," begins one of these scenarios. Instead of pretending, Michalowicz's case would've been better served with real-life examples of businesses who succeeded with this approach, along with some who failed by missing a step or two.

Overall, "The Pumpkin Plan" is a quick, entertaining read that will get a businessperson thinking. The author's premise definitely has merit - it's a shame that the premise is not backed up by a more rigorous book.

I think I want to be a farmer now!

I just read a new book that makes me realize that maybe I want to be a farmer after all! The Pumpkin Plan is another over-the-top book by best-selling author Michael Michalowicz set around the lessons from farmers that grow those gigantic, prize-winning pumpkins. After reading Michael's first book, his insightful Toilet Paper Entrepreneur, when he announced that he was writing a second book called The Pumpkin Plan I was on a mission to get my hands on a copy. I was fortunate enough to be able to obtain an advance copy of the book and devoured it in one sitting.
Once again, Michael has used his wit and business acumen to convey compelling business advice for any entrepreneur who desires to really take their business to the next level. This book is an interesting read for anyone, but it really strikes home for the serious entrepreneur that desires a plan to help focus their business on a few, easy to understand strategies aimed at taking their business to the next level.
Unlike many "business books" today, Michalowicz isn't using the book as a spring board to get you to purchase some great package where he will give you the "secrets" that you need to implement his strategies. This book is packed with the full details of a plan that you can begin to implement even before you finish reading the book. The details are there, along with helpful links to his website where there are additional materials that the reader will find instrumental in implementing his plan.
The entire book is based on the premise that many entrepreneurs end up after years of struggling in their business, almost broken physically and mentally, from the strain of wearing all the "hats" that entrepreneurs find themselves wearing. He describes the typical "one nut guy" (and the ONG's videos on Mike's website are enough to inspire any entrepreneur to action) who has worked for someone all his life, or worse yet, worked for himself, not utilizing the simple strategies laid out in The Pumpkin Plan, only to reach the age where we all hope to retire and enjoy life, only to find out he has spent it all, given it all, and has nothing left to enjoy. The Pumpkin Plan gives the reader a roadmap to avoid this fate.
The Pumpkin Plan is destined to become one of those business classics that every entrepreneur will want to own, to keep on the credenza behind their desk, to continue to review the dog-eared pages, re-read the highlighted sections and margin notes, and turn their business into that gigantic pumpkin that will serve them and their family rather than vice versa! I strongly recommend The Pumpkin Plan to any serious entrepreneur that wants to take control of their business AND their life.

Got Mike?

The Pumpkin Plan is a well written and fun read. The content was extraordinary, reminiscent of Good to Great and Great by Choice (Jim Collins) without all of the empirical mumbo jumbo that can bog a reader down. The author has distilled entrepreneurial skills down to a simple to understand brew. My husband and I have started 5 businesses from scratch, not every one successful. "If only" we had The Pumpkin Plan BEFORE or during some of them, we'd be better off. C'est la vie!

You don't need a degree from Princeton to be an entrepreneur. Many others have gone before us and we have the opportunity to learn from them! Mike Michalowicz has definitely given a simple plan to help us out. Remember, just because it's simple doesn't necessarily mean it's easy. If it was easy, everybody would be able to do it. Learning from Mike can improve your advance toward success.
