From the chalky cliffs of England, and even from the distant western coasts of Ireland, unsuspecting inhabitants were swept into cruel captivity. . .

“In 1684, Algiers, being twice bombarded [by order of the French king Louis XIV] sent deputies to sue for peace, and to surrender all her Christian slaves. Tunis and Tripoli made the same submission. Voltaire, with his accustomed point, declares that, by this transaction, the French became respected on the coast of Africa, where they had before been known only as slaves.”

The author also points out the evil of slavery worldwide, and of how Charles V of Spain simultaneously fought Barbary slavery while granting European traders the right to export slaves to the Spanish colonies in the New World:

“It is said that Charles lived long enough to repent what he had thus inconsiderately done. Certain it is, no single concession, recorded in history, of king or emperor, has produced such disastrous far-reaching consequences.”

About the Author
Charles Sumner (1811–1874) was a senator for Massachusetts who was one of the leaders of the abolitionist movement in pre-Civil War America. A radical reconstructionist, Sumner actively sought the destruction of racial segregation and even sought to remove the word “white” from American naturalization laws—which made his work on white slavery in the Barbary states even more remarkable and, later on, his most suppressed work.

Little known history of white slavery in North Africa

Wonderful little known history of slavery over the years, with focus on the Christian slaves of the Barbary States of North Africa. I recommend this book for anyone interested in slavery over the years in the world.

Senator Charles Sumner was anti slavery, and was the man who was caned until he was unconscience on the floor of the Senate by Representative Brooks of South Carolina the day after he gave an anti slavery speech.

This is a very interesting little book where he focused on the white slaves in the North African Barbary states including Morocco, Algiers, Salee, Oran, Tunis, Tripoli and Bacra. He starts out with some history pointing out that slavery had gone on for millennia. People captured in a war were frequently enslaved. Men to do hard work, including rowing gallery ships and the women frequently made concubines. He then addresses the rise of the Islamic religion in North Africa in particular. When Islam expanded via the sword in its early days, it over ran essentially all of Spain. Spain fought for many years to drive the Moors out, and become free of the second class citizenship under Islam. After 1492 when Ferdinand and Isabela re-conquered the last of Spain from the Moors, whom we would now call Muslims, there was an increase in piracy. Ferdinand and Isabela evicted many of the Moors, who moved to North Africa in many cases and became pirates who preyed on Christian ships. The pirates enslaved the crews, in many cases for ransom by their country or family. (He mentions only as a minor note the fact that the Moors were also importing negro slaves from south of the Sahara in much larger numbers than the captured white Christian slaves.) He does an excellent job of tying together slavery over the years. The preying on Christian ships by the Barbary Pirates was a money rising operation against the religious enemies of Islam. At different times the Barbary Pirates preyed on English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, etc. ships, as well as raiding the Christian shores in the Med, and the Atlantic, up as far as Ireland and the English Channel.

He also point outs that it continued until the early 1800s, when the US in 1815 sent a squadron over to defeat the pirates get the American captives. However, the real end came in 1816 when the British and Dutch showed up with 5 line of battle ships, 10 frigates, 4 bomb vessels and 5 other small ships, and fired 50,000 shot at Algiers, the largest fortress, and essentially leveled the place. This led to the Barbary Pirates giving up their last of thousands of white Christian slaves and stopping their piracy. He makes the points that negro slavery was ongoing in the world, in particular in the American South and the Barbary Coast at this time, but that it was not addressed when the white Christian slaves were freed.

This is a very illuminating book in how Senator Sumner tied together slavery over the ages. The book is extensively foot noted, and reference are provided.

Historical Documentation of White Slavery

The author went to great lengths in providing crucial and historical evidence of events of Christian white slavery during a time in Europe's and America's history!

Charles Sumner provided the list of countries involved in these horrendous acts and was not afraid to list the guilty parties by name.

I enjoyed the stories about acts of heroism (Lord Exmouth, Admiral Van de Capellan and John Fox - to only name a few) of the great men involved in trying to liberate the tens of thousands of slaves. Mr. Sumner wrote in some detail how the slaves tried to free themselves.

The book is highly informative for any historian and anyone trying to find out about slavery of men or women of any color, religion, or country.

On the pages, the ink is somewhat faded (please bear in mind the book was published 1847) in some places or I would have given it a five star but you can still make out a great deal of what was written. A great read!

I understand so much of how I am from how my bloodline has adapted and prospered in spite of this terrible journey that those of my past have had to endure.

About the Author
Peter Wolfendale is an independent philosopher living in the North East of England. He considers himself a heretical Platonist, an unorthodox Kantian, and a minimalist Hegelian, but is equally happy being described as a rationalist. His work focuses mainly upon the intersection between the methodology of metaphysics and the structure of rationality, but also includes foundational topics in the philosophy of value, ethics, aesthetics, and social theory.

I rate this book 4 stars with the hope that it will be purchased and read with care by those sympathetic and unsympathetic to object-oriented philosophy. Although it will most likely do little to dissuade the former and its direct engagements and critique of OOP will add little to the opinions of the latter (other than a rigorous formulation of the problems we [yes I include myself on this "side"] already know to be the case) it is worth a read. In particular, the highly technical chapter 3.4 "What are objects Anyway: On Ontological Liberalism" and 3.5 "What is Metaphysics Anyway?" are both interesting in their own light. Additionally, chapter 4.2 "The Horrors of the Future" is quite entertaining (my favorite moment being the hypothetical 2023 APA panel composed "entirely of inanimate objects" of which "the ensuing audience discussion unanimously agrees that the contribution of a small half-eaten pot of jam [...] is the highlight of the event"[392]).
I won't give the book a full review, but I do encourage you to read it if you are interested in questions regarding what philosophy can do and how it should go about doing what it can.
I eagerly await Harman's response to the devastating critiques contained herein. Hopefully the final object in the conversation will be a waving white flag of concession.

Wolfendale has provided an excellent service here in patiently and quite generously expounding (steel-manning) the ideas of OOO and then one by one showing them to be utterly vacuous. He won't get any credit for it, and I suspect the likes of Timothy Morton will simply psychologize it away under the heading of 'resentiment' - Wolfendale is, after all, obscure, and unlikely to be shuttling around the world on various junkets and hobnobbing with conceptual artists and celebrities. Perhaps his ferocious critique is inspired by simple envy? Who cares - it's correct. Those sympathetic to OOO should note that Wolfendale's critique comes from a basically analytic perspective, and shouldn't be lumped in with the various pseudo-left, academic 'radical' jibes at OOO, which are even worse than OOO itself.

Don't bother calling

I've read the previous books in this series and found them to be lighthearted fun. I was looking forward to this one but I should have known better. When the description didn't make sense, I assumed the plot would be better explained in the actual story....not so much. The story begins with Sy being stalked and that plot line is dropped when he's kidnapped to be sold to someone who wants to add him to their collection of rare items. With me so far? After trying several times to escape, he and his kidnapper wind up in bed together. This is after Sy had been drugged, shocked and fallen out a window. Great powers of recuperation. The story wanders through the plot and finishes with a whimper (or the set up for the next book in the series).

Working together these two ladies create magic

If you want to laugh please read this improbable tale of involving several different paranormal beings. I had a great time revisiting Phanta City. Although this is the 4th book in a series, it could be read alone, though I don't recommend it. But if you do, then you will feel compelled to read the other books in this series. If you like laughter with your words this series will have you laughing out loud.

How do you seduce a demon? Why would you want to? Do you conjure a demon or are they just walking around? Is there anyone immune to a siren's song? What the heck is a siren? What kind of pet would a demon own? Demons own pets? If you're being bribed to handle the kidnapping of someone or in Phanta City terms take a Contract out on how do you screw it up royally? How can fae magic be used when trying to fulfill a Contract?

When you're being stalked it's so hard to enjoy yourself. How do you dodge a stalker? When you are kidnapped do you make the most of it or do you try to escape every chance you get? If you dance in drag at a burlesque club does it mean you're not really a man? Does it mean you'll rent yourself out to do private "dances" for money? Why would someone want to do it? What possible enjoyment could he get out of doing it?

To answer these questions and so much more you gotta read this book (and the rest of the series :)

I love the world that Lynn Hagen has created for us in the flip of every page. She is one of my favorite Authors because she is not afraid to open the door to the ugliness of the world. Yet she fills that horrible abyss with humor, love & romance. She lets us know that good can overcome evil. That monsters can be destroyed.

An excellent book - interesting, engaging, and truly helpful! Especially if you are examining your career path or a job change.

Douglas Campbell has written a great book that I truly hope people find and read - it can be a huge help to any businessman or woman that is evaluating their career. First and foremost, it inspires you to think about this critical time period in your life that Campbell describes as ages 16-28, but also - it's a fun and quick read. Each of the stories that Campbell tells about his past clients is very different, and yet interesting in its own way - each client make a breakthrough that is totally unique for their situation that is heavily affected by their 16-28 period. Some decide to stay with their company using new tactics, some decide to leave and go out on their own, some have to make personnel changes, and more.

The book and stories, including Campbell's own about his young adulthood and his career since, feels authentic and is completely relatable. The principles he discusses, including finding your internal compass, the importance of mentors, core strengths from your young adulthood, plus when to consider leaving a job, changing your strategy within your organization, or starting your own company - are all simply laid out and applicable. Lastly, it's nice reading this material from a well regarded business coach who has been doing it for almost 20 years - he really seems to connect with and help people in all levels of business and has such an extensive coaching and business history to draw upon. Buy this book and spread the word, you won't regret it.

A great book for anyone who wants to be happy and successful in their career/work life. Doug's process of having people reflect on the years between 16-28 years old is unique. The examples of some of his clients' stories were very interesting to read. I will certainly recommend this book to my clients seeking career guidance and to my colleagues in the career coaching field.
