Fascinating premise

John Simpson’s premise for Undefeated Love, a male/male romance novel, is absolutely fascinating: Kurt Mueller is a young gay man in pre-WWII Berlin. Ernst Rohm, leader of the SA, and best friend of Hitler, takes a shine to Mueller and makes him a member of the SA, mostly to be his boytoy. Mueller begins to rise in the ranks, first in the SA, then the SS, and he actually becomes a member of Hitler’s private guard. During all this, Mueller maintains a relationship with his true love Stefan. The story is packed with plot points that weave through the Third Reich and a concentration camp, and enough treachery and danger to fill an epic novel. And therein lies my objection to this. As a male/male romance novel, it follows the formula that I’ve come to know, having read several of this genre: the book is no more than 200 pages, packed with explicit sex scenes, and has appealing characters with a central gay love story. Coupled with the interesting premise, this is a most satisfying romance novel. But I wanted much more. Simpson is a good writer. He knows his subject well, both the gay elements and the Nazi elements. I would much rather have read an epic novel of a gay man’s struggle in Nazi Germany. I wanted tons of more development in both plot and character. I longed for character delineation, descriptions unique to each character so that Nazis were extremely nasty and cruel, heroes were wildly inventive and cunning. As it stands in its present state, Undefeated Love is a satisfying tale of a man to whom things come easily, a man who rises quickly in the ranks, a man who thinks of a plan that is instantly carried out without much struggle, a man who has few true obtacles in his path, a man in a Nazi Germany where dialogue sounds extremely modern and American, where there are few pictures painted of a Germany rich in culture, sights, and sounds. With this kind of development, Simpson could have an amazingly rich epic novel of the struggle of a gay man to survive in a period unique to our times, the Nazi Germany where gays were persecuted as much as Jews, thus drawing a parallel that could not only have been a great service to gay culture but a path to a bestselling mainstream novel. I liked Undefeated Love; I only wish I could have loved it.

The two main characters Kurt and Stefan I wanted to have more connective interactive tenderness to help strenghten their devotion during the situation they faced . Yes they both professed love, but Kurt was selfish for most of their relationaship doing what seemed his own agenda. He did become self sacrificing in the end which I feel saved the read.

When his father's drunken boasting puts him in a dangerous predicament, Freawine must not only worry about doing the impossible (spinning straw into gold), but the improbable (hiding his true gender from the Prince) as well. As in the original story, a magical little man appears to help make the impossible possible. The price he demands for each night labour is greater than the night before, until he demands the impossible - the first child born of Freawine's union with the Prince - and the young spinner agrees.

Just how the story twists from there is a delight I'll leave you to discover for yourself. It's not quite what you would expect, but it is so entirely satisfying.

A fairy tale with a very happy ending, this is a story that's sweet, funny, and tastefully erotic. When all is said and done, it's the kind of story that just makes you smile in delight.

Modern Twist to a Classic Adds Fun To This Sensual M/M Read

This is quick read that puts a gender-bending spin on the classic Rumpelstiltskin tale. It ultimately makes for an entertaining read with the added twists of the paranormal and a bit of sensual m/m loving.

With war taking all the young men of their village, a young mother has her son Freawine dress and act as a female to keep him safe. Becoming Frea may keep him safe but it also makes him lonely as he's alienated by everyone in the village for being strange. When his mother dies it's just him and his drunken father with makes him even more alone as his father ignores him for the most part. One drunken and boastful night though has his father putting his life on the line after promising their Prince that Frea can spin hay into gold. It's a scary time as he has to rely on help from a magical dwarf to stay alive. Add in a prince who has secrets of his own and it all heads towards a collision course on their wedding night where Freawine finally ends his loneliness and everyone's secrets are revealed.

For its short word count we get to know Freawine fairly well. He may dress and act like a girl but his feelings and reactions are all man. He's sometimes ashamed of his body's reactions but in the quiet of night he revels in it. The Prince knows about loneliness too and not being able to be himself which makes their pairing believable and points towards a satisfying HEA. Though we don't get to dig too deeply into the Prince's psyche we do know that he'll accept Freawine wholeheartedly and will have him living like a queen with steamy encounters to count on. Those looking for a fun twist on a classic will find themselves caught up in the sensual web of magic this story engenders!

A M/M take on the classic Rumplestiltskin with a twist, this retold fairy tale had everything it needed to be convincing. Freawine is a peasant boy who had a mother so fearful of losing her only son to the wars that she dressed him and raised him as a female. Mother has passed but Freawine must still “be” a girl, since that is how the villagers know him. Unfortunately, because he can’t bath with the others or do anything that might show his true body, the village girls consider him above himself and he’s pretty lonely. He has talent with the thread but he certainly can’t spin straw into gold, which is what his drunken father boasts one night at the tavern. Since the dour, grim Prince hears it and wants that gold, what is a Freawine to do?
For his part, the Prince has reasons and secrets of his own, but with threats and lock down, he commands Freawine to produce the gold. I absolutely loved when Freawine willingly laughs and commits to the promise extracted by the ugly little man. Excellent!

A very well-written, informative, and eye-opening book that should be given to everyone that is going to college. This should be required reading in all of our high schools. Students need to be informed of what they are getting into when they take out large loans for a college education. If you know someone who already has a large loan debt, buy this book for them. They will thank you for it.
