About the Author
HOWARD B. HILL was one of Wall Street's original "rocket scientists." He worked at AG Becker Paribas, Prudential Securities, the Union Bank of Switzerland, Daiwa Securities, Deutsche Bank and MassMutual Financial.

His innovative bond structures helped lower the cost of home financing on three continents, and the analytic techniques he pioneered have become essential for investors and risk managers in many of our largest financial institutions.

Must Read for anyone who invests or who cares about the economy.

A must read for anyone who invests or is just interested in how the securities market works. H Hill was one of the creators of those structured finance products that were at the center of the 2008 crisis. In the book he gives a vivid history of what happened and explains, in terms that anyone can understand, the concepts behind CLOs, CMOs, MBS and the rest of those terms we keep hearing. He also explodes some myths about what caused the crisis and points out dangers that have yet to be addressed. His explanations are clearer than anything I've ever found on the subject of mortgage back securities, but even if you aren't interested in how they work, the overall story will explain much of how the financial system was brought into crisis -- and that's something you need to understand, whether you are an investor or just someone who cares about the health of our economy. One of the most entertaining and understandable economics books that I've read in a long time.

Other than being the best "no calculator required" book I've ever read on the ...

Other than being the best "no calculator required" book I've ever read on the intricate world of deal-slicing, I've been recommending Howard's book on my www.urbansurvival.com site as the most meaningful introduction to the upper worlds of high finance to come along since Paul Erdman's classic novels like "The Silver Bears" and "The Crash of '79".

Just one problem, though: Erdman's books (still available here on Amazon) are fiction. Howard's book is NOT.

He admits, for example, right up from that "I invented half the bonds they call "toxic waste." Talk about the ultimate "inside view" this is it..

Hill is not repentant, though, because as you wind your way through the book, the lights start going on: Why banks do what they do and how important the notion of securitization really is for everything from home loans to credit card debt.

What also comes to light is that "OK, if collections of mortgages are good and useful, then how did it almost collapse global finance. And right in here you start to see that while the mortgage crisis could have been solved for about $100-billion, the bigger problem - and the real villains who almost crashed the world were the predatory capitalists who wield leverage like a Hollywood starlet swings her assets.

By the end, you're disappointed. Not in Howard's work; it's first rate. But with the consummate failure of the two party (or is that two campaign fund groups) that can fix anything, including the obviously still broken system.

So why the title? Finance Monsters, I mean come on.

Except they are just that: the leverage-slingers who made out like bandits. And instead of being sent to their graves are chilling and spending. But only till next time. The "Finance Mon$ter$" will be back. My bet is 2016-2018. And that gives you plenty of time to see how the global Kabuki of reform all fails again, but not until another another "presidency" bidding war here in the Checkbook Republic.

A Fresh Perspective

Having read After the Music Stopped, The Big Short, and many other books on the topic, I wanted a book that delved into the more technical aspects of the sub-prime mortgage crisis. Not only does Howard Hill provide this but he also writes in rational, non sensationalized terms. His book brings an interesting and somewhat contrarian perspective to the securitization industry, largely because unlike other authors, he's been a major player in the industry his entire career.

The only reason I give the book 4 stars is because it lacked a bibliography, which I found odd considering the topic is academic in nature.

Not only that No Distance Between Us is a beautifully written stand alone coming-of-age Yuletide short story

I am curious about young autobiographies. Not only that No Distance Between Us is a beautifully written stand alone coming-of-age Yuletide short story, it is also an excerpt from a five book series: A Harem Boy's Saga; a memoir by Young. Young (the adolescent in No Distance Between Us), is now in his sixties and he tells us that while this is his true story, he promised to maintain confidentiality and allegiance to his mentors and the secret society he was then inducted into. Therefore, we know that the names and places have been changed. After reading No Distance Between Us, I was compelled to ready the entire A Harem Boy's Saga series. The author has thus far published his third volume - Debauchery. The first book is titled, Initiation and the second is titled, Unbridled.

Young was born into a Chinese family of privilege in Kuala Lumpur, Malaya, the third son who early on showed an interest in ballet and fashion. He and his father, a very successful businessman, did not really have a good relationship and in fact, he was not much of a father or a husband. Young was sent to boarding school in England after he was caught having a sexual rendezvous with another boy. What his father did not know was that at school he would be inducted into the Enlightened Royal Oracle Society or EROS and it was there that he learned sensuality and sexuality. The members are trained to be apprentices in harems in the Arab Emirates. What we see here is a very personal view of the Arab world and it is indeed shocking when we consider the treatment of homosexuals under Muslim law. Hopefully this book will bring others with similar experiences to write their stories. I had always believed that such secret societies were fabrications of vivid imaginations and to learn that they actually exist show us the skin trade is alive and well. In addition to receiving a traditional education, Young learned sensuality and carnality. Young writes about his life with great detail but there are graphic scenes of sex that might make some readers wince (but not the readers I know). We get a look at cultures and subcultures that we never knew existed and a brand new look at the Middle East. For me this was a revelation as I lived for many years in a non-Arab country but I did have gay Arab friends and never heard of anything like this. I do not doubt a word in this memoir because I am so aware of the patriarchy that exists in these countries so it is not totally surprising to read that this went on.

There is so much to be learned A Harem Boy's Saga - I - Initiation —from Young’s childhood life in Malaya to the secret societies in Europe and to the sexual adventures of the upper classes in the emirates. Young was born into affluence and remained there even as a member of a harem. He catches all the details which at times are shocking but taken as a whole this is quite an educational text. I could not stop reading and the more I read the more I learned from this enlightening memoir.

Some may wonder how Young got from England to the emirates and how he was able to hide this from his parents. The trip came under the auspices of a student exchange scholarship program by which Young was sent to a private school somewhere on the Arabian Peninsula. From there he was taken to a secret location where he met other scholarship recipients. He was introduced to the rules and regulations under which he was to live and informed that they were never to be violated. He, in turn, was granted rich rewards and he became a player in a game of the rich and powerful that took place in secret and behind closed doors.

EROS was founded by George Gordon, Lord Byron in the 1800s. During his travels he became enamored with the Turkish way of life and was especially fascinated by the harem. With the passage of time there began an exchange program between England and the emirates and wealthy Arab families funded the scholarships in cooperation with the boarding school. Young felt sure that he had made the right decision and was rewarded not only by the Arabs but by the masters at his school. Boys who were not sexually inhibited were recruited. They had to be comfortable with their sexuality and not afraid to go new places and do new things.

Initiation comes in at about 600 pages (and this is just the first of five volumes) and I sat and read the entire book without stopping. There is just so much here but the reader must be prepared for the graphic sex. Chapter 28 is entitled “The Art of Seduction and Flirtation” and is basically the pre-requisite for what is to follow as the boys are trained in the arts of body language and grooming which are regimented. Sensuality and foreplay are also considered arts and are taught as well. (An interesting note is that there were young girls who were trained to satisfy the heterosexuals and there were bisexuals as well).

Perhaps one of the chapters I found most interesting was “Sex Before Circumcision”. Arabs are circumcised at 13 years old and there is a difference in sex before and after as is so wonderfully written about here. I could go on and on with examples but it is to everyone’s advantage to read for themselves. I just did not want Initiation to end. Think about how often we get an education with eroticism to boot. The book is extremely well written and if this review seems to be coming to an abrupt end, that is deliberate. I just want everyone to have the experience of reading this. It is unlike anything I have ever read before.

I strongly recommend reading the entire A Harem Boy's Saga; a memoir by Young (5 books series) if you enjoyed No Distance Between Us as much as I did.

A tale for the sexually inquisitive

Young's No Distance Between Us: A Yuletide Story. This book is for sophisticated YAs, NAs, and up. That said, this story is told for true, according to the author, Young. I have been reading Young's entire Harem Boy series, which is more like an Arabian Nights (unexpurgated) for the 21st century than any other contemporary work. The story in this volume concerns a young man who becomes an initiate of a clandestine sexual society. in the Middle East after leaving his UK boarding school. In the UAE he is trained to serve in harems of the rich and powerful. In this volume, he falls in love with his chaperone. The author says "My story has been kept under wraps for close to 45 years. The correct moment has arrived for me to make known my unique education." and indeed he does. The story is plausible and one hopes at lest based in truth.

If you are sexually inquisitive, this book may be for you or a loved one. If not, then you have been warned.

We have a small business and started doing payroll this year. I wanted a book that would give me the information I needed to get started and to be able to converse with our accountant intelligently without complete confusion. This book was all that I was looking for, and in fact, is proving to be a fantastic reference manual for any questions that arise concerning payroll. The book is affordable, easy to read and understand, and accurate in every detail so far. For the small business owner, this is an excellent primer. There are plenty of computer payroll programs out there, but it still helps to understand the basics such as percentages, when deposits need to be made, how much, and quarterly reports.

If You Don't Use a Payroll Service Third-Party at Your Business, a Good Read

This book is well-written, but my wife ordered it to understand her client's thinking when they set up their payroll systems. She found that while it was an easy read, it tended to be a bit repetitive at some points. It really lays out what one should do in order to set up a payroll system, but she felt it lacked some emphasis on why internal controls are important, and a lot of the points are redundant in a world where many business are using payroll services such as ADP or Paychex (which is increasingly popular even for the smallest mom-and-pop business in our region).

Quite enjoyable

Just like the second book in the series, this third book in the Bath House Boys' series is similar in tone. It's a quiet, almost angst free story featuring two men who work at the Bathhouse that are opposites in many ways.

The server Zeph is in his own words an "incurable chatterbox". His body moves as much as his mouth; always in motion. Despite being thin he is strong and has come to terms with a life long very lithe, but muscular figure that he inherited from his mother. He absolutely adores his job. He has the opportunity to talk to people all day and wear as little or much as he likes. And the atmosphere is practically stress free; moving at a leisurely pace. Zeph is a happy person who exuberance is appreciated by the patrons of the bathhouse. He is there to please which is why he chose hospitality as a major in college.

And then there's the cook, Roger. He is quiet, talented, efficient and troubled. He loves creating meals & snacks for the bathhouse patrons and staff. He really appreciates the autonomy he has in the kitchen. He hated the hustle & bustle as well as the monotony of a large restaurant kitchen. Because Roger loves working at the bathhouse the very strong mutual attraction between he and Zeph is problematic, especially with the issue that Roger had with his last boyfriend.

Also if they were to get involved once they broke up it would be very awkward on the job for the only two members of the bathhouse cafe staff. So they can't get involved. But Roger did not count on Zeph's sweetness, smartness, or persistence.

A First-rate Read

As a member and trustee of a Rhode Island organization that is focused on military history with a special focus on the American Revolution, I am always on the lookout for books on the subject. Finding one that has a local connection is even better. Christian McBurney deserves high marks for this one. "Spies in Revolutionary Rhode Island" is a first-rate read that recounts in detail the activities on some familiar names as well as lesser known figures. Both sides, British and American, are included. The author's research is extensive and well-documented in the bibliography opening the door for history buffs to delve further into the subject. The chapters are will organized and the style makes for an easy and entertaining read for both those with a casual interest as well as anyone who wants to use these stories as jumping-off points for more in depth study. This one is well worth your time!

McBurney captures the essence of the danger of spying during the Revolutionary War Period.

Although a native Rhode Islander and somewhat more interested in events of the Revolution from my State, this book is a fine example of diligent research on the author's part. I was amazed by the breadth of characters that were involved in swapping information back and forth--good or bad deeds depending on which side of the conflict you were on. The extreme danger that they all faced is something that amazed me in the reading. Reading this book takes you back in time and shows one what it took to be living during a very tumultuous period when neighbor was pitted against neighbor and sentiments in families were not always aligned. I would recommend this reading to anyone.

Odd pairs make for great depth to this sexy short

This short story was unusual, primarily because the characters were uber relatable. Sara lives in a loveless marriage, tied to the man just because of the kids. Alex loves a guy that doesn't really love him back quite the same way. So, at first it was odd to read a gay guy's tryst with his male lover, then see him totally going at it with a girl, but, honestly, life IS like that.

Even though I'm not a guy nor am I gay, I enjoyed the male love scene just a little more, because it was coming from a very tender place for the characters. But I so related to Sara...hitting your late thirties, married to a jerk, wishing for more...yep. Totally relating. I can't pinpoint why I liked this story so much, but I did, and I think a lot of other people will, too.

This is a sexy story about an unusual threesome. I liked how the author introduced the characters, bringing them to life so we could see what made them tick. If you want a hot steamy read, this book is for you.
