I Was There.

Excellent book. I am a 89 year old veteran from WW II . I served in Gen. Patton's Third U.S. Army, XII corps Artillery, 273 rd F.A. Bn.. Our guns were 155 mm. (Long Toms). I remember very well, Gen. Patton' s order to close station , and prepare to move North. Before the order to move , we were in the Saar Basin. We had received information that Hitler was planning the last big fight. The Headquarters Battery commander, Captain Lemke, handed to me a Browning Automatic Rifle. He told me that if the German Army attempted to cross the Saar River, not to surrender or retreat. That night, we received orders to go North. We went into battle north of Luxembourg City. I received all 5 campaign battle stars from Normandy, through the war in Germany. I joined the Army when I was 17, and was activated in the Army after my 18th birthday, September 1943.

A mostly traditional overview of the Bastogne siege from an American perspective

There have been two new books on the defense of Bastogne released in the last two weeks: The first was "Those Who Hold Bastogne" and the latter is this reviewed book, "No Greater Valor". I thought both books were good but I liked "Valor" better. It was more deliberate in its telling of the siege of Bastogne though its also a summary, providing just the highlights. Mr Corsi also stops his coverage of Bastogne on 12/26 when the leading elements of Abrams' task force enters the town. He misses entirely the heavy fighting for Bastogne and its surrounding countryside in the following week or so later by far greater forces. The trek of the 4th AD as it fights its way north toward Bastogne is also anemic. The book is also heavily US centric, having considerably less German material than the American side.
To add some punch to his story the author seamlessly adds quotes from heavy weights like Hugh Cole, Charles MacDonald, S. L. A. Marshall and others. It's a nice touch that really adds emphasis to key points of the story. The author also develops key mini profiles on the following officers: Middleton, McAuliffe, Roberts and Patton. The author also does a good job of selecting the key highlights to be covered in his story as well as the personal accounts that adds to the human drama of war.
While I overall liked this book, there were couple points that can be argued against it. A few times the book is melodramatic and slightly overblown. Also the author deems it necessary to frequently stress that God was overlooking and protecting the Americans at Bastogne against the evil enemy. On tactical matters the author also stresses the Americans were greatly outnumbered and that's just not true. Yes, the Germans had a few more men but not nearly enough by attacking standards to overwhelm the defenses. Most of 2nd PzD and a majority of PLD were sent west leaving the 26th VGD and a few attachments to handle the attack. The author also stated that the Germans were dramatically slowed to the west by not controlling Bastogne and that too is incorrect. The panzer divisions easily bypassed Bastogne on their way to the Meuse River. Hitler and F.M. Model just didn't allow the necessary forces to attack Bastogne in the early days, believing it more important that the panzer divisions should reach the Meuse quickly.
A few good maps and a photo gallery are also included as is a Bibliography, Notes Section and Index.
Admittedly I prefer a more complete tactical and strategic rendition; books written by Cole, MacDonald, Parker, Winton are examples but if you're interested in an overview this book should be placed on your short list for it's a worthy endeavor.

No Greater Valor

Each book covering any historical event or person can never quite contain all the material available, the various views or the contested aspects of an event. I read a couple of different reviews of this book before writing my own as I was curious as to how others viewed the material and whether they agreed or not. Suffice it to say that books are sometimes downgraded in rating for what they don’t contain or for how they were written. Each review is an opinion and I understand that, but I would love to see people point out the positive aspects of rich, historical, nonfiction writing like No Greater Valor with the understanding it isn’t meant to be the final word on this particular historical event.
No Greater Valor should be a on the shelf of anyone who loves either history, military or WWII in particular. The way it is presented, I believe, is to show how much our forefathers who served during this time had a faith that gave them strength and courage when fighting, suffering through the elements or any number of other reasons. We owe a debt to those who served during this war as we do all our service men and women due to their willingness to lay down their lives for America.
Hitler and his regime were evil and cruel, and the fight of the allies was as much spiritual if not more so than physical. Corsi points out various leaders sharing what they brought to the war front along with the oral history that was written down for future generations. In our age of “instant”, we should be reminded of how life wasn’t as instant and people took time to share their stories orally so we could learn from them long after their passing.
What a trip through history the author took to highlight this particular battle in December 1944, along with the outcome. As most will never forget 9/11, neither should we forget those who have served and are serving, along with the stories that have yet to be told. I find it quite fascinating to hear a person’s point of view, who was there and lived to tell about the experiences. Whether you agree with the author or what he presents really isn’t the focal point. God is the focal point in this one of many battles that took place overseas. I hope you consider giving a copy to the history person in your family or friendship circle to enjoy, and a copy for your personal library at home to pass on to the next generation.
