The Memoir of a Suffering Christian

The author is the son of parents from Holland who immigrated to Wisconsin and he along with his eight siblings were raised in the Dutch Reformed Church. The creed of this religion included the exacting teachings of Calvinism, which allowed no room to question anything the Bible said. As a result, the congregation lived severe lives, totally judgmental of anyone who sinned as the Bible described it, and obedience to God was more important than love or compassion for sinners.
As the author grew up and reading the Bible daily, which was a family practice, he realized that the God of Christianity was a God of wrath and love often demanded of Moses the death of other countries that the Jews passed through. Particularly, it bothered the author when God demanded Abraham to kill his son as a sacrifice. This memoir is the story of his path of pain and confusion that he traveled even into his now advanced age of 76. Through his early years as a minister after spending hours trying to reconcile these condemnations and judgments, even unto death, he could not give up the Bible and he spent hours, searching himself and others to try to justify the viciousness of the orders of God, which many modern day churches still follow. When in the pulpit, he attempted to by-step some of the verses of the Bible and interpret them differently. But he was talking to congregations raised in this judgmental pathway and they would complain until he had to leave as minister.
As time passed and he continue to attempt to justify those unloving parts of the Bible, he never really could and because he wanted to use the Church as a place of love and compassion, he began to take college courses in psychology, but at the same time, had to find churches who were more liberal. He was most stubborn in his determination to convince others, especially ministers, that fundamentalism was not the message that Jesus was sending, but it didn't work. Since he was a man and stubborn, he suffered much emotionally and mentally, even making enemies of his family.
This is a good book for Christians who also cannot relax with a God of wrath and love as promoted in many Churches of Christianity and perhaps find solace in the suffering of this man.

Prisoner of Belief: One Man's Odyssey to Reclaim His Soul by John Van Dixhorn PhD is a book that really is a must read and when you do read it, it's a real eye opener. This book will grab you and not let go of you until you get to the end. You just might find yourself reading it again like I did. You will find the pages turning and turning and turning some more and wonder if you are turning them or is the book doing it. This book is about the author, who became a minister and was a very successful minister. But, he began questioning his faith, his church, his family among other things in his life. He soon left the ministry. He became a secular psychologist. This book is his memoir. It's a memoir of a very courageous man. He shares all that he had to confront, including God. Did John make it through everything? How is he now? Does he have a relationship with God? This book is so good. I enjoyed reading it very much. I gave this book 5 stars but it really deserves many, many more. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I loved it. I look for more from John Van Dixhorn.

Prisoner of Belief, a read that takes no prisoners!

This book is a must read for anyone who has contemplated profound changes in their lives. Indeed, its an extraordinary, well told personal story that forces you to contemplate and reflect on what you believe - even when you might have thought that there was noi need to do so, in the first place. The openness and candor with which the author reveals his painful journey that challanged his beliefs and disbeliefs in the bible, religion and god is remarkable and rarely equaled in literature of self analysis. It's rich in its presentation of religion's historical role and eruidite and insightful in presenting the forces that take hold of reason and belief - that succumb to an unquestining "faith". Written without jargon and with the insightful skills of an obviously, outstanding psychotherapist, I recommend this book without reservation.

It must be noted that this is not my typical reading material; however, this was recommended to me by a friend, so I gave it a read. Ms. McDonagh’s introduction was the best first taste of this genre. I felt that she was holding my hand, guiding me into a world that was completely unfamiliar to me. I was fascinated to learn of the back-story of this pulp fiction, including the anonymity of the authors, the disappearance of the publishers and their intentions. It was, in essence, a literary critique and history of vintage gay erotic novels. If this had been a course offered in college, I would’ve definitely signed up for it.

The double-feature novels are intriguing with many subtleties as well as overt sexual relationships and scenarios. I became invested in the characters and looked forward to seeing how the stories unfolded. Some are cringe-worthy and some are eye-rolling, but we had fair warning from McDonagh.

I hope she continues her investigation and is able to eventually track down these authors and/or their peers so we can all find out more.

Interesting, but not fascinating.

both Man Eater, by Dick Jones, and The Night of the Sadist, by Maitland Pauly offer a descriptive, interesting and entertaining overview of the 60's - 70's gay sex scene of some of the most famous sites--USA; Spain; England; Amsterdam; Berlin--underworld gay scenes as well as the fetishes and the authors's sexual fantasies and experiences. I also find Jones's attempt at accomplishing a serious, yet entertaining mystery genre, more successful than the Night of the Sadist, by Maitland Pauly. From the erotic and psychological point of view, both writers, in my opinion, particularly, Pauly, fail to accomplish their purpose. Both Jones and Pauly, lack the details, and the literary elements that more serious, polished and exprience writers utilize to capture the reader'as attention from beginning to end.

Filled with emotion, you will laugh, cry and most importantly - think.

Great book! This book describes not only a personal story of loss, but boldly brings to light the importance of knowing when to ask for help, when and how to make decisions and how to navigate through the days, weeks, months and years following the death of a loved one. Not only is this book helpful for those who have lost someone they love, there is also great advice for healthcare providers, friends and families trying to help. Filled with emotion, you will laugh, cry and most importantly - think. A loving tribute to her husband Mark, Mary shares important issues we all need to prepare for.

Life on the Trampoline is a joy to read, despite the fact that it is a memoir of Ms. Denson's journey of recovering from her husband's death from cancer. Her humorous and often irreverent approach to what is clearly a tremendously painful subject for her makes us want to come along with her on that journey. To cheer for her victories. To mourn her losses. The book will not only appeal to young parents who have lost their spouses, or women, or people who have struggled financially. Ms. Denson's delightfully sassy style, and intimate but relatable anecdotes make Life on the Trampoline a good read for a wide audience.

Keep moving!

It's nice to know that the emotional roller coaster that I've been on for the last five years is "familiar" to other spouses who have lost a loved one. After 49 years of marriage going from we to me is the most significant challenge I've faced after my husband's death. I've always been very independent and took care of our finances but he was my best and biggest supporter in anything I did. That silent support and his sense of humor are the two things miss the most. There is a piece of my heart missing. Miss my Murray.

Read between the steam

This tale belies its genre. Not that it isn't chockfull very steamy sex scenes, it's that these aren't the point of the book. They are a vehicle, almost a symbol of a damaged, frozen young man beginning to thaw and let the world in. It's a way for those he loves to connect to each other to form the net, that will catch him when the ice breaks and he has to face what he has kept locked away all this time.

This is a love story, not a not a wedding bells and happily-ever-afters, not a star-crossed-lover tragedy but the story of a man who has is "handing out love like it was oxygen" as he rebuilds his life, finally finds the courage to accept himself.

This is not a quick read, it's a journey filled with living, individual characters all learning to live with themselves and find their place in the community. The scenes are so vividly painted that when you finish the book and look at the cover, you know exactly where you are standing in the world you have just left. The symbols are expertly handled and subtly used. This book will move you, if you see beyond the steam it will uplift, it will excite, it will nurture and reassure, and will make you cry. It certainly did me.

I'm familiar with the author's ability to tell a story and so I took a chance on a book in a genre I wouldn't normally read. I am very glad I did, it's a journey well worth taking, definitely more than once. It'll change your view of the world, maybe a little, maybe a lot. This one will live with me for a long while like good books should.

This book is a wonderful book. Whether you are looking to prepare for an exam in a hurry, or need something to help you get the most out of the course as possible and get an A, this is your book. This is very comprehensive, but it is very easy to digest.

Each section is broken down to include everything you need to know about the different major life and death concepts. For example, the section on abortion discusses what abortion is, the kinds of abortion, the stages of fetus development, the law surrounding abortion, religious teaching on abortion, and then discussed how the major ethical theories apply to abortion. The chapter ends with questions to test what you learned. You will see key terms, quotes, arguments, strengths and weakness, self-test questions, and so much more! The images are enjoyable and help bring a fresh element to this kind of material.

Grace Lynn has done it again with another fabulously sexy and yummy story. I seriously couldn't imagine taking the meeting of an alien species as calmly as Eric does in this story. The passion that bloom's with just the first meeting between Eric and Azri is without words. There is bonding, nurturing, and love with all the characters. Grace Lynn does an amazing job bringing these characters and their surroundings to life and bringing me into the story. I most definitely can't wait for more.
