Great First in New Trilogy!

This is an exciting first book in David Mallach's new trilogy. His knack for incorporating current events and mind-bending "what if's" makes him a great contemporary voice. There are multiple storylines weaving together here. First, the Chinese threaten to dump massive amounts of U.S. bonds in order to destabilize the global economy. They use this as leverage for gaining an unprecedented foothold in the Middle East where they have just deployed the world's most massive aircraft carrier. A high-stakes game of chicken ensues in which China attempts to secure a presence in the Middle East where they are already Saudi Arabia's biggest buyer.

A second storyline emerges as a small terrorist organization called Allah's Fortune plots to front run the Chinese bond dump, thereby making themselves rich beyond all imagination while simultaneously helping to bring down world markets. Thus, "economic terrorism" is born, a new sort of power play that looms as a very real possibility in today's world.

The third storyline involves a sultry redheaded medium and past-life regressionist named Camille O'Keefe ("I'm not a psychic," she reminds us... lol). Camille represents the voice of alterity, a female perspective that provides fresh insight into the otherwise masculine world of politics, wealth, power, and war.

The fourth storyline that stands out is Mallach's wonderful expose into Saudi life and culture. All together, this is a very ambitious book and is, I think, a must read given the state of global and domestic affairs as we head into a presidential election.

The book is more than just fiction. Mallach's narrative style seems at times like documentary, too. It's a great technique. I look at this book as a sort of docudrama/thriller. It's unique. The story is creative and distinct. The writing is sharp, especially the dialogue.

The second book in the trilogy is Turning Final. It just came out, and I can't wait to read it. Again, it seems very timely in exploring the impact of a radical First Lady who stands up to womanizing, abuse, and the mindless drive to amass power. Pretty cool considering where the country is today.

About the Author
Andrew J. Peters is an author, an educator, and an activist. His Werecat series was a finalist in The Romance Reviews' Readers' Choice Awards. His début young adult novel The Seventh Pleiade garnered a 2014 Rainbow Awards Honorable Mention. His other books include Banished Sons of Poseidon, Poseidon and Cleito, and The City of Seven Gods. He was recently included in Loop Magazine's "Four Must-Read Authors with Buffalo Ties."
Andrew grew up in Amherst, New York, studied psychology at Cornell University, and has spent most of his career as a social worker and an advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.
Most of Andrew's work takes inspiration from mythological themes, but as a young writer, he adored Agatha Christie. At Smallwood Elementary School, he was briefly a literary celebrity when his school principal invited him to read from his novel Murder at Moosewood Mansion over the P.A. system at lunch.
In the 90s, Andrew founded a 'Coffeehouse' in suburban Long Island to provide a safe place for LGBT teens to make friends, express themselves through the creative arts, and get help if they needed it. While he writes about fantasy worlds, his work tends to feature LGBT characters, and he is proud to write gay fiction for readers of all ages.
Andrew lives in New York City with his husband Genaro and their cat Chloë. Outside of writing, he is an administrator and an adjunct professor at Adelphi University School of Social Work.

Part 1: Werecat: The Rearing

This was a very gruesome piece of the story. If you were expecting light and fluffy, think again. This part established Jackson’s history as a human and how he came to be a werecat. It told a sad tale of how his world was taken from him without his knowledge or consent. Oh don’t get me wrong, the sex was fully consensual, but the conversion to werecat was not. In this portion of the trilogy, the author did a great job of painting Jackson in a light that allowed the reader to develop empathy for Jackson and become invested in his story. I know I definitely ended this section wanting to know more about werecats and wanting to see how Jackson will start over and survive. I am not so much even worried about a romance so much as intrigued by the werecat origin and want to see Jackson survive this life that he did not ask for.

Part 2: Werecat: The Glaring

So this section introduced a bit more mystery and a few more details about being a werecat. It also introduced the romantic element. I was pulled in and I want to know more about The Glaring and what it means to be a werecat. Are all werecats like Benoit and the members of the Glaring? What exactly did Benoit leave behind? What will happen to Jackson and will he be able to keep his love interest? The author has done another fine job of connecting the reader to Jackson and his plight. I want to know more!

Part 3: Werecat: The Fugitive

In the final part of the trilogy, the action was ramped up and more information was given about werecats. Jacks met a new pride who live life much differently than The Glaring. Jacks gave in to the lure of a potent catnip and a few hot bodies (not technically infidelity but too close for my liking), but in the end returned to his love. This part was much faster paced and more interesting but I was still left with so many unanswered questions. I have also decided that I am unsure if I really like Jacks. He was not always the most forthcoming or honest individual and I feel that his love can do so much better.

Overall, I enjoyed this trilogy. The author is a hell of a storyteller, but I am confused. The title “trilogy” usually implies that by the end of the third installment, things will come to an end. But that was not the impression I got here. So either this was incorrectly called a trilogy or the author is leaving me hanging. I have found no evidence of more to come from this world, so my rating is reflecting the fact that the author has ended something that feels unfinished to me. There are still so many questions left unanswered and the ending is open to more. So dear author, is there more and I just don’t know it? If so, I would love to know when and where I can read the rest.

A Trilogy your going to love

Have you ever wished an author or publisher would combine the stories of a series into one book? Well Andrew J. Peters and Vagabondage Romance Publishing have done just that with the WERECAT series. Right now you can only get the Trilogy in paper back but you can still get the individual stories as eBooks as well.

The first three stories of the WERECAT series have been combined into one sweet read. Now I don’t mean sweet as in warm and fuzzy because this isn’t your warm and fuzzy kind of shifter story, although it does have its moments. I mean it as in “Sweet” all I have to do is flip the page, no distractions to continue the story. You might call the way they combined these stories the ultimate in box sets.

Andrew J Peters wrote each story with just the bare minimum of repetition in the beginning of each story so you are not rereading the last story twice as you progress. Another bonus is you still get to enjoy all three covers too, they are included. I’m not a fan of a lot of time switching, going from the present to the past. There is quite a bit in the first book but it was needed to set up the series and Andrew did make it work well for the story.

I really enjoyed Andrews take on the Weres in his story. These are not born Weres. There is an old and possibly dark magic to the transformation from human to werecat. Little spoiler here, it isn’t just a quick little bite that starts this transformation. Nor is it a sexual thing, but that can be included too. *wink* I also enjoyed his choice of animal for his weres. Big cats (lions, tigers, panthers and other assorted species of big cats are included) are not really large pack animals which add to this story. Not only because cats are one of my favorite animals but because he has included a bit of the spiritual connection between them and humans. Andrew has also given us a reason to look at our own cats as well as the neighborhood cats with a little suspicion.

With magic comes mystery and intrigue. The werecats are dwindling in numbers and something has to be done to ensure their survival. They are ready to do whatever it takes. Whether that means going to war or reclaiming the old magic, old magic that has fallen into the hands of a new werecat. One who hasn’t lost his human connection while learning about his new life and trying to hang on to his humanity. As well as the man he loves.

This is one or three stories you will enjoy. It does end on a cliff hanger but never fear Andrew isn’t going to leave us hanging. He is planning one possibly two more stories to bring this adventure to an exciting end. Keep your eyes open and on Andrew J Peters. So grab you cute little kitty, get comfy and enjoy.

The tales transform just like werecats!

This is a collection of 3 short pieces of fiction originally released as ebooks. Now they’ve been brought together like one full novel…but there’s more to come because the story isn’t over yet.

The first part is almost straight up horror, which is totally my thing. By the second part, it starts to expand and focus more on the main character and his relationship with another man/werecat—this segment really establishes our connection to the main character, not to mention, things get pretty sexy. Together, the first 2 parts remind me of a gay version of the 1982 horror film Cat People. Part 3 is the longest segment, in which the story and its world begin to expand into more of a fantasy realm as we learn of divisions and conflicts between werecats. I imagine the next installment of the series is going to become pretty epic and feature some major battles. If you are a fan of shapeshifter fiction, gay fantasy romance, and even werewolf fantasy novels, the Werecat series is definitely going to draw you in.

About the Author
Philip Cooke is senior lecturer in the School of Humanities at the University of Strathclyde. He is the author of many works on the Italian resistance, including The Italian Resistance: An Anthology and The Legacy of the Italian Resistance. He is also joint editor of the quarterly journal Modern Italy. He lives in Glasgow, Scotland.

Ben H. Shepherd is a reader in history at Glasgow Caledonian University. He specializes in the military history of Germany and Austria during the first half of the twentieth century, with particular focus on the origins and conduct of counterinsurgency warfare. He is the author of War in the Wild East: The German Army and Soviet Partisans and Terror in the Balkans: German Armies and Partisan Warfare. He is also coeditor of the collection War in a Twilight World. He lives in Glasgow, Scotland.

Not as good as I expected

When I read the description of this book it sounded interesting, but because I had never read the author before I waited until there were reviews to see what other people thought of the book and based on the reviews and my love of all things British it sounded like a safe bet. I didn't hate the book, but I did find it disappointing (spoilers to follow). Things I didn't like:
1. Ben and Ashley didn't actually get together until the 85% mark in the book and even after that there was very little romance happening; there were never any "I love yous" or plans for the future or any thing. I would definitely not consider this a romance.
2. Some of the historical stuff was interesting, but the book was too draggy and dull at times. It should have had half the detail on setting the house up as a public venue (permits, etc. are not interesting reading) and twice as much (or more) romance. At times it seemed more like a manual on the requirements of opening your house to the public than a romance.
3. The Mom. She stole/defrauded over 5 million (I'm assuming pounds, it didn't actually say) from her children. She showed no concern for them or the fact that her actions would make them homeless -- losing a home that had been in the family for hundreds of years. Even after she got caught she continued to steal heirlooms that belonged to the Earl of Crofton. Ben should have gone to the bank immediately and told them that he had not signed the paperwork (she forged his signature) and therefore they were not responsible for the debt (in this country all financial/legal documents require a notarized signature to avoid something like this, I'm assuming England is the same, and the bank didn't require it because they thought they were sucking up to the Earl. Whatever the reason they were negligent and could not hold the Earl responsible for their mistake and his Mother's fraud). If they wanted to prosecute his mother and send her to prison -- good. That's where she belonged and it would certainly help her learn her lesson (the excuse that she hadn't been the same since her husband had died 3 years earlier was weak at best; plenty of people mourn the loss of their spouse without stabbing their children in the back.) At one point when her ongoing theft was discovered Ben threatened to send her away to live with a relative and her response was something to the effect of "no, you can't; this is my home". She didn't care about her supposed home when she gambled it away.
4. Ashley's sudden about face with no supporting facts. Throughout the book Ashley had said he wasn't ready for, and didn't want, a long term relationship. He would be happy with short term sex with Ben, but nothing more and then suddenly, with no evidence at all that he had a change of heart, he's saying he had wanted to seduce the Earl into a one night stand and then try and convince him to turn it into more nights and eventually a relationship. That was confusing -- it was opposite of everything he had said throughout the book. Characters are certainly allowed to change their minds, but I want to see some of his thought processes along the way that caused him to change his mind. Not just a sudden about face.

Things I liked:
1. Ben. He was very endearing (other than his wimpy stance on his Mother's crime); you wanted him to find his happily ever after (which is why the lack of romance is even more disappointing).
2. The seemingly miraculous discovery that solved all their financial problems (theoretically -- another complaint would be that they ended the book before the auction, so we never get to know if the folio sold and for how much. If I owned something like that I wouldn't relax until I actually had the money in my hands; until then it could be destroyed or stolen, so the author does the reader a disservice by not following through with the sale before the end of the book). I read for escapism and don't want to be bothered with pesky, real life problems like money struggles, so it's nice to know that all of Ben's financial problems would be solved once the folio sold.
3. Some of the historical info. Whenever I've seen those huge British houses on TV, I've always wondered what it was like to live in something so large and historical and through some of the detail in this book we got a little bit of an idea of what it would be like.

All in all it wasn't an awful book, but it definitely won't go in my re-read pile

Somehow I thought this was a historical, because there is also the Crofton Chronicles series by Cohen that’s set in the 16th Century. I should probably pay closer attention to blurbs! (Good advice for all of you out there in general) Anywho – I wasn’t disappointed at all, because this was a fresh, funny, breezy romantic romp that I really enjoyed.

Based on the ancestors of the aforementioned series (now I want to go back and read that!), it’s the tale of Benjamin Redbourn, the current Earl of Crofton Hall. Unfortunately, mummy has gambled away the family fortune and the bank is about to repossess Ben’s beloved Crofton Hall – the only home he’s ever known. He’s a bit of a playboy, so having to come and save the day really cramps his style. But he’s also smart and no nonsense, so he sets about getting the Hall readied for the paying public. Weddings, parties, conventions – all those events will definite help pay the bills. Too bad charming Ben doesn’t know the first thing about event planning.

Fortunately, Ashley Niven – a former university chum of his sister’s – knows all about that and more. Pressed for time, as the bank is running out of patience, Ben capitulates to his sister’s wishes, and hires Ashley for the job. This involves Ashley living on site, as well as working *ahem* closely with Ben. A wonderful slow burn of “I want you – oh no, I musn’t” ensues. I just wished things could’ve started heating up sooner.

That was the only drawback of this story for me. I was completely fine with it being obvious that they would get together. I mean, it’s a romance, so we all know the boys have a happy ending, right? But I felt as if the author made it drag on too long to get to the part where Ashley is finally hired – let alone anything else - which was almost at the 25% point of the book. If all the boring interviews with lame candidates prior to the hiring of Ashley had been edited down, there could’ve been more book saved for naughty times at the end. Rawr.

Head’s up – and I personally lurved this part – this is written in very British English. The author has kindly added a list of Brit terms at the back (charmingly written as if Ben himself had made the list). So don’t let that scare you off. It had that enchanting quality that I love so much when I watch shows on the BBC.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and I love Cohen’s style. If you like a dash of pomp and circumstance with a side of drama, sexy and witty men, plus fun romance – then you will adore the hell out of this book. I give it 4 enthusiastic lizard claws.

Crofton Hall has been in the Redbourn family for over four hundred years. It's much more than a building. It's a haven where generation after generation have shared life's experiences, both good and bad. It's the place where Benjamin Redbourn, of 'Saving Crofton Hall by Rebecca Cohen, has lived all of his life and where he has grown to be the confident man he is today. When his mother's gambling debts threaten to destroy everything the Redbourn family has worked to build, Ben reacts with a vehemence which is frightening. After his initial shock, Ben wastes no time correcting the situation. He is not going to lose his home to a gambling debt. Ben is not above swallowing his pride and calling in the many favors he has earned over the years to defend his home. He's surprised at the number of people who graciously offer to help.

Ashley Niven is employed to organize events at the manor, which include, but are not limited to, planning weddings and banquets. Everyone assures Ben that people will be waiting in line to be married there, if only because of the beauty of the place. Ashley's love of history gives him an important perspective when it comes to respecting the home and making sure that, whatever venue is there, adequate precautions are in place to prevent any desecration or invasion of privacy for the family. Ashley reminded me of Sebastian Hewell, who was the first earl's lover. Even though Ben is his boss, Ashley is determined to hold his own; on more than one occasion he confronts Ben when disagreements arise. Although not an actor, like Sebastian was, Ashley still has a flair for the dramatic and an amazing knowledge of décor and the house's history. Ashley doesn't hesitate to do anything that he asks anyone else to do. He throws himself into the project heart and soul. Crofton Hall and Ben have charmed Ashley into believing that he belongs there. Yet, because of Ben's reputation, not so different from the first earl's, Ashley, like Sebastian, is guarding his heart. Since being gay is no longer illegal, Ashley and Ben don't share with Sebastian and Anthony the fear of retribution if caught together.

Apparently time hasn't changed the Redbourn men's disposition. Although more amiable than Anthony, his ancestor, Ben shares some of his character traits. Like Anthony, Ben has had many lovers with no serious commitments due to the pain endured by a relationship which had a disastrous, painful ending. In both cases, the incident lead to heavy drinking and debauchery. Fortunately for Ben, he's trying to put his improper behavior behind him; but he is determined to stay single forever to save himself from another broken heart. Ben is practically celibate in his conviction to do so, at least until Ashley comes to work for him. Not only does Ben admire Ashley for his good looks, he's also charmed by his sense of determination and vast historical knowledge. Ben is convinced that with Ashley's help, he has a good chance of pulling them out of the financial mire and retaining Crofton Manor. Ben is easygoing, but when provoked, displays a temper rivaling Anthony's. Ben likes to be in control, but isn't a control freak like Anthony was. Ben doesn't mind taking a back seat sometimes, especially when the other driver clearly knows what he's doing.

This story is an offshoot of the Crofton Chronicles series. It continues the story of Crofton Hall moving into the present. I've grown very fond of Sebastian and Anthony, and am delighted for the opportunity of finding out more about them even if it's in references to the past. In many ways, Crofton Hall is a character in its own right and, just like a person, holds all kinds of secrets and has shared the events which have taken place and those that continue to happen with her family. I think that she's very happy with the new circumstances and feels more alive than ever. Those of you who enjoyed the 'Crofton Chronicles' series will love how Rebecca has chosen to continue its story. If you are new to the characters, you could read this story without reading the other series, but, without reading the 'Crofton Chronicles', the story loses much of its significance. I recommend this story to those who like history, intrigue, angst, and a happy ending. Thank you, Rebecca, for a great beginning to a new series.

Good ideas, but needs proof reading

There are a lot of intriguing ideas and information in this book. Some (involving the consumption of small amounts of baking soda) I would want to confirm with other sources to ensure safety. Overall, the information is worth more than the $3 spent and I encourage everyone to try more of these natural solutions verses the alternatives in the local supermarket.

Warning: There is a lot of sex. With that said, Shiloh hit the pages running. She wove a tale of sex and trust.

Andrew was a slave on Robert’s father’s plantation. After the war he found his chance at freedom and took it, leaving a younger Robert behind. Within the ten years that he has been gone, Andrew became a free, and successful business man. Now he wants some one to share his wealth with and call his own.

Robert’s fate was not as lucky. After the war his father sold him to a brothel because he didn’t want to take care of him. Robert wants to be free and to find someone to love and cherish him.

After ten years the two men paths crosses again. Andrew has it arranged for them to spend the weekend together. He wants to regain Robert’s trust so that when their weekend is up, Robert will want to stay. Andrew is a dominate to Roberts submission. Though Robert feels abandoned by Andrew when they were younger, it takes a great deal of trust for Robert to let Andrew do to him as he pleased.

I enjoyed reading this book and can’t wait to read more from Shiloh.
