The Past as Pilgrimage: Narrative, Tradition and the Renewal of Catholic History, by Christopher Shannon, Christopher O. Blum

In this book, Catholic historians Christopher Shannon and Christopher O. Blum challenge the secular bias currently prevalent among professional historians, and argue for the compatibility of faith and reason in the study of the past. Inspired by the understanding of tradition developed in the work of philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre, the authors first critically examine both the internal contradictions and the enduring faith commitments of secular objectivity, then proceed to explore various traditions of Catholic historical thinking capable of synthesizing the technical advances of modern history with distinctly Catholic historical narratives. Their argument seeks to foster a conversation about the ways in which Catholic historians can integrate their faith traditions into their professional work while still remaining open to and engaged with the best of contemporary, non-Catholic thinking and writing about history.

Review
“Shannon and Blum argue that Christian historians need to rethink how they perform their craft, less subject to positivism and isolated from other disciplines, and more attuned to the big questions. Throughout they remain attentive to their responsibilities as both researchers and teachers. They are passionate about their thesis, will surely provoke a range of responses, but have added an important voice to the debate about the vocation of the Christian historian.”

— Fr. James L. Heft, S.M., President, Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies, University of Southern California

“The authors show that all history is written from a particular worldview, and when the Catholic worldview is precluded, other philosophical or covertly theological perspectives take its place — much to the detriment of the Church, which depends upon historical narratives for its communal flourishing. Exhibiting the wise judgment, erudition about the past, and narrative skills that comprise good historical writing, this gem of a book offers a brilliant fresh start for Catholic historians. Future historians will point to this book as a classic text that accomplished for the field of history what MacIntyre accomplished for philosophy. A must read.”

— Matthew Levering, Perry Family Foundation Professor of Theology, Mundelein Seminary

“Taking as their starting point Alasdair MacIntyre’s understanding of the inescapably tradition-grounded character of all forms of knowledge and moral inquiry, the authors argue that it is high time to look past the stale and exhausted forms into which so much professional historical writing has settled. Instead they seek to restore the dignity and scope of historical writing by envisioning it a kind of pilgrimage, a way of deepening and keeping faith with the common life of the Church. A provocative and reverent book, which deserves a very wide readership.”

— Wilfred M. McClay, Blankenship Chair in the History of Liberty, University of Oklahoma

“The Past as Pilgrimage is a bold call to recover a distinctly Catholic historical imagination and to chart an alternative conception of the historian’s craft–one that views historical inquiry as much more than a professional enterprise. Shannon and Blum’s manifesto will challenge and inspire historians who find Enlightenment historiography impoverished. And it will surely anger others for whom a different understanding of the historian’s craft is unthinkable.”

— Donald Yerxa, Editor, Fides et Historia

"Drawing on Catholic thinkers ranging from Augustine and Newman to Balthasar and MacIntyre, Shannon and Blum challenge the dogmas and functionally atheistic methodologies that shape most contemporary historical work.  In doing so, they underscore the importance of a crucial and often neglected intellectual task: rescuing the writing of history from the delusion that we can provide an account of the past, our own and all humanity’s, without reference to God."

- Michael Baxter, Visiting Associate Professor, Catholic Studies, DePaul University

By Franklin Rausch
I recently purchased and read 'The Past as Pilgrimage" and found it both fascinating and informative. Drs. Shannon and Bloom have written a text that is both accessible to amateur and professional historians who are interested in a Catholic Christian approach to history. In a nutshell, Shnnon and Blum call for an approach to history that focuses on individuals and dramatic narrative against the backdrop of the eternal destiny of human beings in order to help people better make judgements and take actions that will benefit the common good. Particularly welcome in this work is that while the authors engage critically with other approaches to history, they do in a respectful manner. Highly recommended!

Let History Be History
By Richard E. Lamontagne
First of all this book was recommended by some trusted historians. The premise is one I espouse: Genuine history does not depend on modern interpretation but on the story as it developed in its time and the context of that development. Therein lies the problem with the statement of history by professional historians, the university Ph. D. class. I am addicted to biographies for the very reason that I believe history evolves in the lives and with the involvement of the actors in the plot (war, marriage, treachery, agreements etc.). I liked the treatment of narrative history by Shannon especially his emphasis on the lives of the saints. There are men and women whose virtue, bravery, courage, sense of loyalty, principles or humor simply stand out and characterize the age and society they lived in. Theirs are stories important to the complete understanding of a certain era or timeline. I highly recommend this readable, interesting book.

Great Ideas and Approaches for Managers and Leaders
By Mike Manoske
A great book if you want to really work with your staff but aren't sure how to approach it. Having a variety of authors providing spot on, real-world examples, you'll walk away with new tools and approaches.

Coaching is about listening, asking penetrating questions and developing mutually agreed upon action plans. The authors honor coaching, and show how to apply these methods in very common situations.

Highly recommend the book and the ideas. It's especially good for new managers and leaders.

Essential guide
By Autamme_dot_com
This is a short but sweet guide in how to hopefully make the most out of your employees or direct reports. Shouting and threatening them is no longer enough!

Today’s employees can be empowered, given some freedoms, encouraged to grow and develop and generally work for the best of the company. All employees are different and you as a manager or supervisor might have been thrown into this seemingly impossible job at the deep end. Most managers and supervisors are not as accomplished at people management than they may think. We all have room to improve. This coaching guide might give a few hints, tips and underline existing knowledge.

Think of it another way. You might have a top-of-the-range sports car or a rusty old banger. Yet both vehicles are capable of being tuned to make them run even better, more efficiently, more effortlessly and to make the most of their individual potential. This is the same with staff at all levels within a company.

This book is the sum of combined thoughts of many experts in the field. It seamlessly manages to get under your skin, getting you thinking and considering matters in a non-threatening manner. One senior leader noted how being coached helped him understand that he could make the biggest difference by doing more than everyone else but by empowering other people to do more and motivating them to do their best, letting go of certain responsibilities and recognizing the limits of his expertise. As a leader, he said, “I didn’t need to have all the answers; I just needed to ask the right questions.” That is the sign of confidence and leadership maturity.

Yet so many don’t seem to get the benefits of coaching, it is said. Many companies view and use coaching as an investment or perk for the senior staff, others view it as a corrective measure for those who don’t perform. Coaching can be and should be for all. It can create challenges and change within a company yet when harnessed correctly it should be a positive catalyst rather than a threat.

Reading this book is not onerous. Each standalone chapter is capable of being read quickly. Digesting and implementing the ideas will take longer. The tone and style encouraged you consider the arguments, selling you to their benefits and underlining the reasons why you might want and need change.

It is a great little book. Of course there are no shortage of such coaching resources yet this is a good composite of many ideas and thoughts, parceled up into a very accessible, ready reference type of book. Whether you are thinking of taking your first steps along the route to coaching or you are already an old pro sold on the idea, this could be a great little companion!

Very useful! A must read for all leadership coaches
By Greg Hawod
Giving feedback or coaching is one of the most important skills our managers and leaders need to learn for their respective organizations to flourish and succeed. I’ve seen countless of articles, books, videos as well as audio materials catering to the development of this important competency in our leadership. Nevertheless, the campaign to make our leaders better in coaching is far from over since this is a skill that needs to be continuously honed no matter how seasoned our leaders are.

Harvard Business Review has recently published the book entitled HBR Guide to Coaching Employees. This is part of the HBR Guide Series of books which delves into the important skills our business leaders need to hone to be effective in delivering results.

This particular book on coaching is written like a compilation of articles written by different experts on the field of leadership coaching. You will get to feel the different styles in writing for each individual as they contribute to the development of the ideas in the book.

Some of the things that readers may particularly appreciate are the following:
1. Includes great insights on coaching which many are violating most of the time. All throughout the book, experts sight many important things to consider when coaching that are usually violated such as inability to make a follow up; not setting aside time for coaching; and, etc. More importantly the book provides numerous ways on how to do it right.
2. Different perspectives. Since many experts contributed to this book, readers will see different perspectives which put the subject into a more holistic way. Different writing styles also make reading more engaging.
3. Most importantly, this book acknowledges the fact that individual differences are important considerations on how one coach.

There are many important lessons here in this book. I am sure that for those who are engaged in developing individuals not just from the rank-and-file employee level but more importantly in leadership level, this book is a must read.

Shattered Illusions (Shadows) (Volume 4), by Brenda Cothern

The Tampa nightclub Shadows, in Ybor City, is the refuge for those who are not quite normal. Simon finally found a home away from home where he ‘fit in’ but he was still the only single person in his new family. Being different made dating a nightmare. John was still hung up on his best friend but when a bartender rescued him from a gay bashing, he never expected his life would go in such in a bizarre direction. Learning about himself and accepting who he was, was a challenge and one he wasn’t sure he could handle.

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!! More Shadows please!
By Angela S Goodrich
Having read a couple of Ms. Cothern’s contemporary m/m romances, the most recent being Guns & Hoses in which I first “met” John, I jumped at the chance to read Shattered Illusions. As it has been a couple of months since I read the book’s blurb, I forgot that it was a paranormal m/m romance, but within a few pages the paranormal aspect was front and center so I hunkered down to find out whether or not Ms. Cothern would be a successful cross-genre writer. I am pleased to report that she absolutely is.

After Simon interrupts an assault, saving John from even more pain and possibly death, he helps him get home and calls in John’s estranged friend, Flame, to take over. While Simon finds John attractive, he refuses to ask for his number because he is disturbed that his libido is targeting a badly beaten man. Through a series of events, John and Simon begin communicating via text and spending time together … in their dreams. Oh yes, in their dreams. Simon is a dream walker (among other things) and is able to enter John’s dreams. As John engages in lucid dreaming, he and Simon have a couple of “dream dates” that don’t stop at the front door. Good grief! Who knew astral sex could be so freaking hot? Unfortunately when Simon informs John of their shared dreams and his ability to dream walk, John assumes that Simon is crazy and breaks off their budding relationship. When presented with proof that Simon is not nuts, John must figure out what to do, how to proceed, and whether or not he can open his mind to the possibility of Simon and his abilities.

I absolutely loved this book. The interactions between Simon and his supernatural co-workers were great. The camaraderie and protectiveness revealed how tight-knit of a group they are – they are one another’s chosen family. This is very apparent when they begin to meddle in his personal life – especially when it comes to John. As the cherry on top, Flame and Tig (from Guns & Hoses) make several appearances in Shattered Illusions, giving its readers a chance to catch up with the guys. While this is the fifth book in the Shadows series, it can be read as a stand-alone book without issue. However, I enjoyed this book so much and the other employees of Shadows that I have to go back and read the previous books in the series so that I can find out their stories. Once again Ms. Cothern you have delivered a wonderfully written novel that has been added to my re-read list.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Brenda Cothern has merged two of her series and where they meet we have Shattered Illusions. Remember John from Guns and Hoses? Well, he’s still not too popular after outing his best friend, he also still fancies him, so he has been spending less time at their local and more time wallowing at the bars in town.

What he thinks is a pick up is actually him being set up to be bashed and as the story starts he is getting pretty brutally attacked in a parking garage. His knight in shining armour comes in the form of a barman called Simon, who has the ability to scare off his attackers.
Now this is where the story is a bit different from Guns and Hoses. Simon is a character from the Shadows Series which is about a group of paranormals. Don’t worry, I panicked for everyone, you don’t need to read the previous books to read this one. The premise is that a group of paranormals have banded together and are a bit like an unconventional family and they all work in a nightclub known as the Shadows. (I read all the blurbs to get a little bit of the back story).

Simon rescues a beaten up John and takes him home. When his friends arrive to take over his care Simon believes that his good deed is done and doubts he will ever see the man again but between John wanting to thank him, Simon being enamoured with him and some hot as hell dreams the pair don’t seem able to stay away from each other.

This is a very odd romance and not one that comes easy. Simon is a dream walker and he finds himself invading John’s dreams on a regular basis. Some of these dreams involve them being friends, some involve them in some scary situations and some of them are damn hot! Simon has been walking in people’s dreams since he was a young teen and something about his dreams with John strike him as being different but he can’t work out why or what it could mean.

Brenda leaves you unsure as to whether this romance will ever work out. Most of their ‘dates’ take place whilst they are asleep and this aspect of their relationship seems to work but they find it much more difficult to communicate when they are awake and physically together. John will not only have to learn Simon’s secrets for them to have any chance but also try and work out exactly who he is and why Simon is wearing a physical mark from a dream. That’s just not possible, right?

Don't Ever Call Me Helpless: Australia's Worst Female Serial Killer (Crime Shots), by Ruth Wykes

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend time with a convicted serial killer?

Or how you would feel when they told you what it was like to take a life?

Don't Ever Call Me Helpless is a powerful, chilling true crime story that offers a rare glimpse into the mind of convicted murderer Catherine Birnie.

In the late 1980s, Catherine and her defacto partner David Birnie went on a killing spree that shocked and numbed the Western Australian community. In just six weeks they abducted, tortured, raped and murdered four Perth women, and were only caught when a fifth victim escaped and led police to the killers.

During the 1990s author Ruth Wykes was a frequent visitor to Perth's Bandyup Women's Prison. She spent many hours with Catherine Birnie, and her account of the woman, mother, and remorseless killer is a must-read for anyone who is interested in true crime.

Welcome to Crime Shots - short, sharp, true crime stories from Australia's past and present.

Chilling, but good!
By Maria Morris
Ruth Wykes portrays a rather chilling picture of a female serial killer, from other sources, but also her own experience with this killer. As honest and clear an insight as one can get to a mind so incredibly foreign from our own.

I highly recommend this book!

INCREDIBLY HOT-N-SEXY!
By Jak
I’m so glad to have been introduced to Naya Blake’s series, “Her then Me”, it is incredibly hot-n-sexy… yet as a new author, Naya really knows how to write tasteful erotica with an enthralling plot that keeps you hooked until the very end but makes you beg for more with every episode. Every word she’s penned pulls you into each character becoming one with them... Dani, the protagonist, is of course my favorite character.. she is so hot, smooth and sexy… Hell she made me wanna be on the receiving end of her affection…she had my imagination running away from me! Whether this story is about lust or love it is awesomely written… trust me! You will not be disappointed; it is a great read, a real page turner… Seriously, I am anxiously waiting for the second series… Naya Blake I’m glad you have arrived!

Thanks for helping my first-grader!
By Иренакс Алексирен
Look at him! Almost done with his first grade – and still cannot read! At all! And no way to get through the tests. What a shame! OK, OK. Well, he is a very smart boy indeed. Perhaps – feels a little bit out of the mainstream - over there, at his new school? His teacher said he's a special case. Haven't heard anything like this – and don't intend to in a future. It's our job – to get him involved, interested and intrigued by new knowledge. Ours – those adults who surround him: parents, GrandMa... So, I am looking for the right alphabet-book. Googled for it. All around. Suddenly – here we go! Bright and lovely one. And its name – B IS FOR BRIGHTON BEACH – sounds very familiar, recognizable I'd rather say. Author's name also rings the bell – but as of now I cannot recall. Heard it – where and how?

OK. Bought this book. Of course, just like everything else in XXI century – ordered from the Internet. An e-version. From AMAZON.COM. But – couldn't stay a temptation – printed and bound it properly: yes, I do love books on paper – their scent, warmth and weight. Now – I need to choose the moment right – and catch my kid with it. Just like a bait for a good fish – right place, right time, right mood. In a meantime – downed myself into an armchair. And started to read B FOR BRIGHTON BEACH. Even recalled its author: Michael Salita, he is the brother of Dimitry Salita, famous boxer, Golden Glove. Looks like he is a writer as well? Interesting. But – strange thing happened: I lost my sense of time, forgot where I am – and was already in the middle when...

E. Eagle... East... Exercise.... Everyone at the Ezra Elementary School Enjoys English Exercises... Well.. Pretty good school that Ezra got...

A-ha! Here we go... My boy mounts himself onto my knee. Welcome.

“What's that, Pa?”
“An alphabet-book.” (Of course, I pretend to be deeply into my reading – actually, no need to pretend hardly. It's a great idea – not only one word for each letter but several examples; with a clear explanation how to use the words, and how to built a sentence right. Nice job!)

Here I see he's got the bait: all his attention focused on the next page. Now. The questions will follow...

“What's the letter is this? And that?”

Evening. Soft and cozy light. And both of us – under the lamp, in the armchair – we read. OMG! Nobody could push him hard enough to read at least a word! Just a miracle in making – nothing less...

Amazing – but dinner waited for us for a long time. Unless we came to the Z (which is for Zucchini on Zebra Crossing!) - we have no way to part from the book.

So, that's how my first-grader started to read. Using wonderful alphabet-book by Michael Salita B IS FOR BRIGHTON BEACH

And the book was illustrated by an artist from Siberia, Yelena Stekacheva. Nice job!

Stars Fall, by Louis J Harris

Keegan Mansfield is a loner. A bilateral amputee athlete with only one goal; to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games. Every move he makes is towards this dream, and even though there are forces trying to stop him, he moves forward because there's too much at stake. Although he has the determination and the will to succeed, there are ingredients missing from his life that he so desperately needs. Truth, love and happiness. When team mate Conrad Smith saves him from a violent incident, both embark on a journey of love that will lead to the truth about Keegan's past. But the happiness their love brings will last for only a moment, for, as much as Conrad believes in Keegan, and loves him, he also breaks Keegan's heart. And, just as things seemed as bad as they could get, tragedy strikes. Will it bring them closer, as one, for neither can live without the other? As time passes, Keegan learns an important lesson, that trust is not a game, trust is as real as day and night, as real as the wind. He learns, through tragedy, that Rio comes with a sacrifice. He learns that true love thrives on togetherness. And hope is all that he can lean on.

Stars Fall
By JustJen
This is my second time reading this author … and I am happy to say that some of the issues I had with that first book were not present here. The tense and perspective flowed much better and allowed me to get a much better feeling for the characters.

This story interested me right away – I’m a sucker for damaged characters. Here, Keegan is the damaged one, having had a double amputation at an early age from a car accident. He is now in college and a pretty strong member of the track team with hopes of going to the next Olympics. While his disability does play a pretty big role in this story, it takes a back seat to his relationship and the mystery involved. I loved reading about the prosthetics and how they affected Keegan’s daily life, though I wish that had played a little more important of a role here and there.

Keegan and Conrad were team mates, but didn’t really become more until Conrad took a more prominent role as Keegan’s savior. He stands up for him against the team bullies, saves him from what seem to be homophobic attacks, and their friendship and subsequent relationship grow from there. Conrad just seemed like an all around great guy and fit well with the sweet Keegan.

Conrad is comfortable being gay, but Keegan is really only coming to realize this about himself, with the help of Conrad of course. What they share seems very special, and I loved watching Conrad bring Keegan out of his shell and show him some of the benefits of being gay. Even though apprehensive about everything at first, it doesn’t take long for Keegan to get the hang of things.

Unfortunately, things get in the way of their relationship. Keegan has issues with his parents, has been receiving hateful postcards and is constantly having to deal with the bullying team mates. We eventually learn there is a lot more to the bullying than first appears, but before that happens, it causes a lot of hardship and almost does Keegan and Conrad in for good.

There were times I felt that things weren’t quite adding up, mostly do to communication, especially where his parents were concerned. Keegan disappears with Conrad on numerous occasions, and it isn’t until he returns we learn his parents were the least bit worried about that fact. Now, his parents are not gems, but this still seemed a bit odd for someone living under their roof. There were also a few other details that seemed more like coincidences that didn’t add up or that were explained away very quickly.

I definitely enjoyed this story and loved how everyone came together in the end (Keegan and Conrad, as well as their friends). I would definitely read a follow up and am looking forward to whatever Mr. Harris comes up with next.

Incredible book
By Jim Dunaway
Is is possible for a novel to be both heartbreaking and heartwarming? To find out the answer to this question read Stars Fall.

Stars Fall is a compelling one athlete's strive to realize his dreams while faced with adversity.

This is the story of bilateral amputee Keegan Mansfield.

His story is incredibly well written, written with compassion and feeling. Even able-bodied readers can identify with Keegan feel the joy of his triumphs and his pain at betrayal.

Would I have Keegan's courage? I don't know. I would like to think I would, but I just don't know.

Keegan is a very complex, intense, driven character full of determination. While not quite as complex, the supporting characters are believable. Just looking at the cover art you can see his determination in his eyes.

The story itself is, as I said, compelling. I read the entire novel in one sitting, only taking bathroom and meal breaks.

Not being able to view an excerpt from Stars Fall, I have to admit I had some trepidation as I've bought several books without reading an excerpt and disliked the book. However, the blurb intrigued me so I took a chance and bought the book. I'm very glad I did. Stars Fall is an incredible book.

If you only buy one book this year, you must buy Stars Fall. On a scale of 1 to 5 I gladly give it a 5.

So much potential but fell short for me
By Jennie
I really wanted to like this book. I was excited to read the blurb & thought it had great potential. I also love the cover.

I thought some of the writing was pure brilliance, but some of it also seemed robotic.

I found a few things contradictory which was confusing & one of the main story lines did NOT make any sense to me.
I get that's it's fiction but I kind of want it partially believable & too me it just wasn't. Even though this part was explained well enough it just didn't ring true to me.

I feel like there was too much squeezed into one book & as such too many things were brushed aside or concluded with a rather unsatisfactory sentence that didn't give enough closure.

It has so much potential, some fantastic writing but overall there were too many things fell short.

I loved This Book.
By Kazza - On Top Down Under Book Reviews
The Slave is a very well written gay fantasy ménage. Tam has lived with Master since his family were killed fifteen years ago. He was meant for the Mistress but it was the Master who always made him feel protected. Master is an underlord and a powerful man in Otiz. The region in unstable and war rages around the zone - the Granthians and Thirskans are tribally opposed. It is the reason Tam ended up in the Cage for auction at twelve, his family murdered before him. Since then, he has been with his master.

The book starts with Tam in charge of buying a new pleasureslave, but he is confused. Tam wants to be Master's only pleasureslave, but he won't argue with his orders, besides it's nice to be given the responsibility by Master to do the bidding. Ordinarily they would buy someone around the age he was when he was offered up for auction - the younger the slave the more malleable and easy to train. But something about the next lot to stride into the Cage, and the men talking about all the things they would like to do to break him, has Tam bidding, despite the slave appearing only five or so years younger than twenty seven year old Tam.

What I loved, loved, loved (yes, I will abuse that word in this review) - L.O.V.E.D.

Great characters - every single one of them. Nicely fleshed out, although I know more is coming and I can't wait. Loved, loved, loved them - the sweet Tam, how I adored him. Caring and people-manoeuvring Master, he grows on you so much. Feisty but edgy Kai, who develops so much as the book progresses. I could not get enough of them. All of them. They compliment each other well. I am not always good with books that aren't standalone, but this trilogy is looking fantastic from where I stand after book #1.

Holy freaking shizemballs! there's smokin' hot sex scenes that got better and better and better as the book progressed. I do love a ménage... but this wasn't stock standard. It was extra spicy and it built. There was frustration, and confusion, camaraderie, some unspoken feelings and a perfectly flawed synchronicity to it all that worked superbly.

The plot is draws you in.This book offers you something different. Subtle world building that I am ready to have expanded upon in the following books. As I read I felt like I was in Ortiz, in the compound outside the city on he edge of the desert, twin suns blazing down during the day, cold in the evenings. Knowing there was more outside but not needing to be a part of it - a lot like Tam. But, like Kai, I felt the itch to do more, even though I know more is not always going to be nice. Then, like Master, I like the idea of making my piece of the world a better place for those who are special to me. So I simply 'got' the three characters. I experienced this world through their eyes, although Master is a little (purposefully)enigmatic.

This is a well paced book which built to, dare I say it, da, da, da...a cliff hanger. Gah! I'll put on my big girl undies and deal - it appears Ms Aaron has the books coming out in fairly rapid succession, so that helps. Highly recommended for fantasy and ménage lovers.

Brilliant and Captivating A Must Read
By MM Book Escape (KMac)
I am emotionally spent from this story. First order of business: Make sure you have book #2 when you start reading. You will be ticked at the ending of book #1 if you are not prepared to keep going. Now…OMFG!! I can honestly say out of my thousands of books, I have never EVERRR encountered an ending so brilliantly and masterfully done. My stomach literally feels as though it is in my throat the last ¼ of the book. Kate Aaron you have just rocked my world.

Tam is a slave to a Master he treasures. He lives for his approval and acceptance. There is nothing he would not do for this man. So, why does the Master want Tam to buy another slave? Is he going to replace him? Move this other slave into his bed? These are things Tam continually wonders over, as he is the one sent to make the purchase.
Choosing Kai was not a hard decision.

As soon as Tam saw him lined up to be sold, he knew he was the one he wanted. He still was confused as to why his Master sent him to make the purchase, but since he did, why not get the one he wants. Kai makes no effort to make it easy on Tam either. He feels threatened by the predicament he’s in. He’s bitter and resentful with due cause. He looks down on Tam as someone who surely must be brainwashed to do his Master’s bidding with no hesitation.

The Master wants Tam and Kai to form a bond and pleasure each other sexually. Until that happens, Master has forbidden Tam to seek relief of any kind unless it’s by the hand of Kai. This hurts Tam in his heart as he feels he is being replaced. The Master will continue to take his pleasure from Tam not realizing he is hurting him physically, as well as, emotionally.

For the briefest of moments I felt nothing but pure, white rage. Why would he punish me like this? What had I done to deserve it? Everything I did was for him, in the vain and hopeless hope that someday he would turn around and love me.

This line right here, gutted me. I hurt for Tam and the way he was feeling. I was angry with Master for placing doubts in his heart. Tam was bought by his Master at 12 years of age. Now 27, his life inside these walls is all he knows. He is relentless in his task of serving and pleasing his Master. He has so much compassion and understanding for others. He wears his heart on his sleeve. As each year passed by, Tam’s desires increased for his Master.

Kai was a soldier and he was free, or so he thought. He fights hard with resistance in his new surroundings. He continually questions the Master’s motives and his true intentions. It doesn’t take long though until Tam starts to wear on him, breaking him down, lowering his armour.

He’s never been with another man but even though he tries to conceal his own desires, he can’t help but watch Tam and Master as they fondle and kiss each other so passionately. He tries to hide his reaction and the evidence in his groin. Tam sees the impact their pleasure is causing and is giddy with the knowledge that he is making that happen.

He’s beginning to understand his new environment and maybe some of it’s not so bad. It doesn’t mean he’s no longer scared and conflicted because he is. But he also sees the contentment in Tam and how comfortable and secure he is. He realizes that maybe he wasn’t as fortunate before being sold as he thought he was. Tam befriends him even though he is jealous of him. He also is attracted to him but realizes it will take time and patience to earn his trust. As he massages his shoulders and applies lotion to his wounds, he can feel him beginning to relax under his care.

He was practically purring, a few simple touches all it had taken to break through some fragile barrier he had placed around himself. I wondered, as he gripped under his knees and flexed, when he had last experienced an intimate, loving touch. Not the trained whiles of a paid whore or loose woman for whom his body began and ended with his dick, but a true lover, a companion who had both time and desire to map his flesh, learn it and make it sing. Had he ever known such a person?

At first, Kai’s defiance is so palpable. His posture is erect and on guard. I wanted to reach through the screen and hug him so tightly. Your heart hurts for his situation. Thankfully, Tam continues to console and comfort him. He begins to see some cracks forming in his façade. A smile here, a touch there. He’s so skittish Tam must be careful in how he proceeds with him.

As Kai begins to relax he becomes so curious that it’s contagious and you realize you have been smiling from ear to ear. You are so wrapped up in the words and pulled in to their world you forget to breathe. As Kai finally succumbs to Tam and his touch you are cheering them on so happy for this breakthrough.

The kiss was clumsy, all teeth and tongues, a far cry from the gentle, measured kisses Master regularly bestowed, or even the urgent, demanding ones when he was lost in his lust enough to devour me alive. Kai clung to me with something akin to desperation. He made animal noises deep in his throat, little half-moans and sighs and grunts I couldn’t have interpreted if I tried.
As days turn into weeks, they continue to grow closer and their bond is strengthening. Kai is falling for the Master even though he is still too stubborn to admit it aloud. Tam and Kai have found an alliance within each other and jealousy seems to have gone by the wayside. They both take pride in pleasing Master and Kai has finally earned trust and respect.

Outside these walls, however, a war is going on. It requires a lot of the Master’s time and attention. Details that he doesn’t share with the slaves for reasons he keeps to himself. Trouble is getting closer and things are happening they don’t understand. The fear is alive and it is consuming them all. What is happening? Where is the Master?

So much blood, so many bodies from the mayhem and destruction.

OMG, the ending is killing me. I am in a panic, my breathing has increased and my heart is beating faster. I don’t know myself what is happening but I am afraid for Tam and Kai. I am fearing the worse, no doubt, but the author has not given me reason to believe my fear is not justified. I don’t even know where the Master is and if he is all right.

I feel like I have just fallen over the edge of a big cliff. Finally, my brain starts to work and I realize it does not have to end here. I rush to Amazon to get book 2, The Soldier. I must continue on because I need answers, I need to know what the heck just happened.

Kate Aaron is a master of her trade. She writes vividly with so much emphasis on detail and descriptions. I fell into the story easily and quickly because I could vision what was taking place. Objects in my perimeter fell away as I became so focused on the content of this story. This doesn’t always happen when reading a story but sometimes you are lucky enough to find one where it does happen and everything else pales in comparison. The Slave is one of those stories that will swallow you heart and soul.

I cannot encourage you strongly enough to pick this up. You will be so enamoured in the world of Tam and Kai that everything else will cease to exist. When THAT happens readers, you know you have just found a brilliant author who has a masterpiece in the making. This is such an amazing story I cannot wait to see what happens next. I just hope my nerves can take it. Go get your copy, one-click that bad boy right now, and prepare to be wowed.

I'll take this series to the deserted island with me!
By Janet Ellinger
I’m going to cheat a bit and write one review for all three books in this series. I don’t feel the need to recap because I’m a little late to the party and plenty of blog sites and reviewers before me have given plot breakdowns for each book. Since I’m certain anyone who picks up The Slave will be captivated from the very first page – just like I was – and I’m also certain no one will stop after reading until they’ve read all three, I think I can get away with it.

From the moment I began reading The Slave by Kate Aaron, I was sucked into a world built entirely from her brilliant mind, but because of her amazing writing ability, I could see and hear and smell that world as surely as if I lived there. (I even read the first two chapters to my husband – that’s how impressed I was at how beautifully Kate used words to create a vision.)

Each book is written from that character’s POV. The Slave is written from Tam’s POV and, while it’s hard to pick “a favorite” here, if I absolutely HAD to pick, Tam would be my choice. I’ve found it interesting that on social media, most people seem to gravitate toward Kai. Not me. Tam is the whole angsty package for me. He is beautiful, delicate, perfectly submissive and whimpers like a child when needy, but don’t ever make the mistake of thinking he’s weak or fragile. There were several times throughout this series when I wondered if perhaps the real Master wasn’t Tam. (He would never agree with me on that, however.) If Tam could have anything in the world, it would be to know his Master loves him, but he knows, as a slave, he’ll never be worthy of his Master’s love. That’s just a fact and it never stops Tam from doing whatever’s necessary to make The Master happy or giving him what he needs, which is often simply Tam’s presence.

The Soldier is told from Kai’s POV and it’s just as fantastic. Kai, as I said before, seems to be the favorite of a lot of readers. I loved him as well, and The Soldier had me in tears on his behalf more than once. Another favorite author of mine (AJ Rose) has written that it takes more strength to kneel before someone than to stand beside them and I felt that this was the overall feeling I took from The Soldier. No spoilers from me, so I can’t explain that other than to say when Kai is faced with a choice, he often chooses the one that makes him appear weak, when, in fact, it’s the tougher of the two choices, but the one with the biggest reward.

The Master is the story I was most anxious to read. I was dying to get into his head. What I found, surprised me. I was expecting – and looking forward to - the dominant personality Tam and Kai see in him, but, what I found, while a tad disappointing, was actually way more realistic. It would be easy to give spoilers here, so I’m trying to be careful, but I’ll just say that The Master is… human. He has the same doubts, fears and guilt as you and me. It took me a little time to adjust my thinking. He wasn’t at all what I expected. Once I was fully ensconced in his head, though, I felt for him. He is more fully enslaved than the men who wear his collar, and, unlike them, his options are few. It’s amazing to me how his future so often depended upon Tam and Kai’s choices. Ironic – and well played by Ms. Aaron.

The writing is phenomenal – even the sex scenes are hot as heck, and I’m one who is growing tired of them – and the editing made for a flawless reading experience, which is becoming rare.

If you enjoy MM (or MMM) and like angst in your story, get all three books now, because you WILL want the next one in your hand immediately. Trust me… you will not even want to have to spend time going to your book site and one-clicking.

This is an epic series and I’ve added them to my ‘if stranded on an island, which books would you want’ list. Until now, that list only contained the Cut & Run series (Abi Roux), the Power Exchange series (AJ Rose), The Original Sinners series (Tiffany Reisz) and The Lost & Found series (Edmond Manning). Even the drool-worthy covers will make a nice addition to my island bookshelf.
