Stars Fall, by Louis J Harris

Keegan Mansfield is a loner. A bilateral amputee athlete with only one goal; to qualify for the Rio Olympic Games. Every move he makes is towards this dream, and even though there are forces trying to stop him, he moves forward because there's too much at stake. Although he has the determination and the will to succeed, there are ingredients missing from his life that he so desperately needs. Truth, love and happiness. When team mate Conrad Smith saves him from a violent incident, both embark on a journey of love that will lead to the truth about Keegan's past. But the happiness their love brings will last for only a moment, for, as much as Conrad believes in Keegan, and loves him, he also breaks Keegan's heart. And, just as things seemed as bad as they could get, tragedy strikes. Will it bring them closer, as one, for neither can live without the other? As time passes, Keegan learns an important lesson, that trust is not a game, trust is as real as day and night, as real as the wind. He learns, through tragedy, that Rio comes with a sacrifice. He learns that true love thrives on togetherness. And hope is all that he can lean on.

Stars Fall
By JustJen
This is my second time reading this author … and I am happy to say that some of the issues I had with that first book were not present here. The tense and perspective flowed much better and allowed me to get a much better feeling for the characters.

This story interested me right away – I’m a sucker for damaged characters. Here, Keegan is the damaged one, having had a double amputation at an early age from a car accident. He is now in college and a pretty strong member of the track team with hopes of going to the next Olympics. While his disability does play a pretty big role in this story, it takes a back seat to his relationship and the mystery involved. I loved reading about the prosthetics and how they affected Keegan’s daily life, though I wish that had played a little more important of a role here and there.

Keegan and Conrad were team mates, but didn’t really become more until Conrad took a more prominent role as Keegan’s savior. He stands up for him against the team bullies, saves him from what seem to be homophobic attacks, and their friendship and subsequent relationship grow from there. Conrad just seemed like an all around great guy and fit well with the sweet Keegan.

Conrad is comfortable being gay, but Keegan is really only coming to realize this about himself, with the help of Conrad of course. What they share seems very special, and I loved watching Conrad bring Keegan out of his shell and show him some of the benefits of being gay. Even though apprehensive about everything at first, it doesn’t take long for Keegan to get the hang of things.

Unfortunately, things get in the way of their relationship. Keegan has issues with his parents, has been receiving hateful postcards and is constantly having to deal with the bullying team mates. We eventually learn there is a lot more to the bullying than first appears, but before that happens, it causes a lot of hardship and almost does Keegan and Conrad in for good.

There were times I felt that things weren’t quite adding up, mostly do to communication, especially where his parents were concerned. Keegan disappears with Conrad on numerous occasions, and it isn’t until he returns we learn his parents were the least bit worried about that fact. Now, his parents are not gems, but this still seemed a bit odd for someone living under their roof. There were also a few other details that seemed more like coincidences that didn’t add up or that were explained away very quickly.

I definitely enjoyed this story and loved how everyone came together in the end (Keegan and Conrad, as well as their friends). I would definitely read a follow up and am looking forward to whatever Mr. Harris comes up with next.

Incredible book
By Jim Dunaway
Is is possible for a novel to be both heartbreaking and heartwarming? To find out the answer to this question read Stars Fall.

Stars Fall is a compelling one athlete's strive to realize his dreams while faced with adversity.

This is the story of bilateral amputee Keegan Mansfield.

His story is incredibly well written, written with compassion and feeling. Even able-bodied readers can identify with Keegan feel the joy of his triumphs and his pain at betrayal.

Would I have Keegan's courage? I don't know. I would like to think I would, but I just don't know.

Keegan is a very complex, intense, driven character full of determination. While not quite as complex, the supporting characters are believable. Just looking at the cover art you can see his determination in his eyes.

The story itself is, as I said, compelling. I read the entire novel in one sitting, only taking bathroom and meal breaks.

Not being able to view an excerpt from Stars Fall, I have to admit I had some trepidation as I've bought several books without reading an excerpt and disliked the book. However, the blurb intrigued me so I took a chance and bought the book. I'm very glad I did. Stars Fall is an incredible book.

If you only buy one book this year, you must buy Stars Fall. On a scale of 1 to 5 I gladly give it a 5.

So much potential but fell short for me
By Jennie
I really wanted to like this book. I was excited to read the blurb & thought it had great potential. I also love the cover.

I thought some of the writing was pure brilliance, but some of it also seemed robotic.

I found a few things contradictory which was confusing & one of the main story lines did NOT make any sense to me.
I get that's it's fiction but I kind of want it partially believable & too me it just wasn't. Even though this part was explained well enough it just didn't ring true to me.

I feel like there was too much squeezed into one book & as such too many things were brushed aside or concluded with a rather unsatisfactory sentence that didn't give enough closure.

It has so much potential, some fantastic writing but overall there were too many things fell short.
