Great place to start

This is a great little e-book for anyone with a cockroach invasion. We purchased our nearly 100 year old home in a respected neighborhood with no idea that cockroaches LOVE this area. With two young kids and a dog, I was leery of using poisons but didn't know how else to rid ourselves of our unwanted house guests. Andrew Seltz provides a well-written and humorous guide to making your home cockroach-free while using products and methods that are kid and pet friendly.

Roach assassin in the making

This is VERY helpful information. I find myself in an almost identical situation. We bought our house one year ago to date. As I cleaned and sanitized the home before my family moved in I noticed a few stray german roaches. This was unsettling, but I had hope. We hired an exterminator, but shortly after, we noticed a horribly bad roach situation outside. I've never seen anything like this. Yes, german roaches outdoors...in our yards, crawling on the brick walls; and literally running into our home anytime we had the door open, even for the shortest of time. Needless to say we've spent close to $1000 on exterminators. The winter went well, but once spring hit, it was almost as bad as when we first moved in. The summer has been dreadful. I finally heard of DE and started with just a little, but once I found a dead roach in our coffee pot, I went a little nuts with it.
Mind you, we never had tons of them running around getting into everything. I never walked in the kitchen to turn on the lights to a roach party; ours are more like ninja roaches. Rarely saw them at night, but we'd see at least one to 3 a day, which was still too much for me. Especially when I started finding one-two crawling in daylight hours, in our room, or our toddler's room. This was after I applied DE in kitchen....Hence me dusting large amounts of powder in our house. I applied so much that it is unsightly, but I see all the dead roaches that would be crawling around, if it weren't for DE. It is time to cut back to just baseboards, but I am a little scared. We had been contemplating spreading it in the walls. After reading this, we're definitely going to. Also, I ordered Invict gel roach bait, and the GI Regulators, but haven't used them for fear they wouldn't work, or make the situation worse. I'm at least going to try the Regulators. I also ordered pesticide for the outdoors, and my husband sprays about every 2 weeks. This is because it is horrible out there.
After moving in, we found out that our house is sandwiched between a homeowner with 7 dogs on one side, and a secret hoarder in disguise on the other. He's in disguise as the front of his house is well maintained and clean, but the backyard enclosed by a privacy fence is like pest/rodent/snake heaven. Google maps do not update nearly as often as we had thought, because if we saw what's really back there, when we researched the house and neighborhood: We would not have bought the house. Be down-right nosey of any potential neighbor, when you plan on buying a house. I thought we did good at the extent of our research, but you have to go beyond research...much further than just research. Even after we eradicate the roach problem, we do not plan on staying. Even though we love our house and neighborhood, the whole experience has just left a terrible taste in our mouths, that I don't think we'll ever recover from it, mentally. It's like being served the best steak of your life, and having no choice but to eat it off a trash can lid...no thank you.
