2014 Foreword Reviews IndieFab Book of the Year Finalist
Oliver Andrews is wholly focused on the final stages of his education at Cambridge University when a well meaning friend upends his world with a simple email attachment: a video from a U.S. morning show. The moment he watches the video of his one-time love Seth Larsen, now a Broadway star, Oliver must begin making a series of choices that could lead him back to love—or break his heart.
The Bones of You is full of laughter and tears, with a collection of irritable Hungarians, flirtatious Irishwomen and actors abusing Shakespeare coloring Oliver and Seth’s attempts at reconciliation.

"Stone's sensitive debut reunites two lovers who were separated by both distance and expectations. Oliver Andrews is slaving away on his M.A. in Cambridge, Mass. When he opens an email from a friend back home in Atchison, Kan., he finds a video that delivers an emotional gut-punch. It shows Seth Larsen, Ollie's first and only love, singing on a nationally broadcast morning TV show in New York. The pair had broken up five years before when Ollie, encouraged by his father, decided against following Seth to New York. Seth felt betrayed: he wanted a career on the stage, and the distance from Boston to New York was too long. But Ollie was determined to pursue his own dream of becoming a social psychologist, even if that meant giving up on love. With the support of their friend Moira, Seth and Ollie decide to take another stab at building a life together. Stone plays the relationship with restraint, letting it unfold slowly and organically.

Their beautiful love story will bring plenty of laughter, and even a few tears, as these men grab hold of their rare second chance. It was appreciated that neither man was willing to give up his dreams because that wouldn’t have felt true to the love they have shared since boarding school.

Review
Why you should read it: Thrilled and enthralled that describes my reaction to reading this wonderful debut novel by Laura Stone. Seth and Oliver are high school sweethearts separated by time and distance. In the five years since they were last together, Seth has gone on to become the darling of the New York stage and appeared on a national morning TV show. After seeing his appearance on TV, Oliver decides to go see Seth in his play and just ... watch. He isn't going to talk to Seth, just enjoy his friend s success from a seat in the theater. Fate has a different plan, and it leads to bit-by-bit heartbreak as Oliver is torn apart by past anguish and misery of what might have been. Just when you are tearing up over the turn of the story, something happens to bring a smile to your face and a bit of sunshine to the book. I couldn't put it down. Characters who appear at first to be formulaic turn out to be unique and special. A plot of lost love reunited is instead so much more. The characters are richly developed, even the secondary characters. I'm hoping to see another book that gives them their own stage and story development. By the time the book ended I was in love with the characters to the point I couldn t let them go. As many romance novels as I read, it surprised me that I couldn't predict the conclusion of the story of Seth and Oliver. It was difficult to pick up another book knowing Seth, Oliver, Moira and the others wouldn t be there. My own life was enriched by this story and these characters. Laura Stone is an author to remember and follow. I highly recommend The Bones of You as a beautifully written book and a story to enjoy. --USA Today

About the Author
A life-long fangirl, Laura Stone has worn many hats: actress, master gardener and computer geek, but now sticks mostly to a Texas Ranger s baseball cap as she devotes herself to raising her children and writing full time. She began telling stories to her parents at age four. She was so successful in catching her parents attention that her father dislocated his back trying not to sit on her imaginary cat, Doka. She lives in Texas as proof that it s not totally populated by hard-line right-wingers and because that s where the good tamales are.

Exceptional story from an exceptional author!
By Jennifer
I read this book expecting a romantic love story that I could enjoy. I got so much more! The characters are fully three dimensional and fantastic, and not just the main characters. Every part of the world this author creates was so fully realized that at some point you are totally engrossed in these people's lives and forget that they aren't really your friends. The highest compliment I can give this book is that, where another author would be content to wrap up the plot and leave it as a "sweet love story," Laura Stone uses that as almost a jumping off point to get into the heart of the story and start examining who these people are and what makes them 'tick.' It's been a long time since I've read a romance story where I couldn't see the ending coming a mile away, but this one kept me glued to the page the whole way through. I don't want to say too much so as to drop hints about the ending, but just know that the characterizations, the plot, the emotions, every part of the story are all top notch. If you are like me the minute you finish this book you'll be searching the internet for an announcement about her next book release. I don't know when that will be, but I promise I'll be buying it the very first day it is available!

I fell in love with Seth and Oliver
By Ritz Bitz
Goodness, I fell in love with Seth and Oliver. Rekindling a first love after ten years. Sorting out what had happened when they were children. Facing down those issues, learning about themselves and each other. Learning to communicate. Learning to deal with life with each other and without each other. This was such a beautiful journey. Oliver's self-doubt and endless optimism was such a combination. His turmoil and inner voice was so very real. I thoroughly enjoyed going on this trip with them. The attention to detail in their locations was amazing - each city having its own character. And the attention to detail in the drawing of side characters was also so enjoyable. Particularly Big Mike. Or the ever stoic and supportive Gus. Or Brandt - who was also a delight in all of his dough-facedness. Such great characters! Even the ones we weren't meant to love, but became so real all the same.

sweet romance
By atavism
I'm a huge proponent of fanfiction as a literary medium, so I was naturally intrigued when Interlude Press was developed to publish stories by fanfiction authors. Not wanting to read a story that I was already familiar with, I decided to buy The Bones of You, which is based on a fanfiction story I had not read, but from a fandom I usually enjoy.
Even having not read the original version of the story, it was immediately clear to me which characters were based on certain characters from the fandom, and I admit that I found that fairly distracting throughout the entire book. I kept noticing the ways that the author had changed the characters and the ways she had decided to keep them the same. In my head I was picturing the fandom characters, and not the actual characters described in The Bones of You.
That being said, I thought this was a sweet romance novel. It was predictable in ways that were comforting rather than boring. I think most people know what they want from a romance novel; it's not a genre in which lots of shocking twists and turns are needed. Instead, we want to appreciate the chemistry between the characters and see them struggle (a little bit) to reach their happy ending. The beginning of this novel had just a tad too much angst for me, but the middle and end were sweet and at times funny. I definitely appreciated that the characters had a real connection and had open, honest conversations about their relationship, rather than just hopping in and out of bed. That made the entire story more romantic for me.
I would certainly consider reading another novel by Laura Stone, but I would prefer to read a completely original work, rather than one based on fanfiction.
