Absolutely Astounding

I've read the book previous to this one, and while it provides a good background, it isn't necessary for gaining great insight and pleasure from this book. I laughed and cried as I read and identified with so much within these pages. No I've not had a past life regression. Would I like one? After reading this, I can say Oh Yes. I didn't see the point of it until now. I don't like reliving current life crappy experiences why would I want past life pains? Partly because it isn't all pain, partly because owning it leads to resolving the issue, but mostly because my soul wants to evolve. My spirit self wants only the best for me. Thank you Laurie for sharing your experience and your soul in the pages of this book. I'm blessed for having read it.

Laurie has done it again! She is giving us a glimpse into her world, the good, the odd and the fascinating. Her humor resurfaces beautifully to take you on a very interesting ride into what she experiences on her own and with her clients. A must read for anyone who is curious about the 'other realm'.

Now I wish I had!

I'd always thought about being a Peace Corps volunteer, but the years passed and I just never did it. After reading this, I sure wish I had. Without getting preachy, Aspley opens our eyes to raw stories of poverty, and life in a third world country. What makes it amazing is the humor with which the story is told. Aspley's memoir is so unpredictable, so funny and so filled with incredible characters I simply couldn't put it down. Her unique view of the world and the people in it help make this a thoroughly unique story, one I hope lots of people read.

What can I say about The Lady Boy and the Volunteer when mere words fail me? I fell totally, completely and utterly in love with Susan and Christine in the very first chapter. Susanne Aspley's descriptions of Thailand and the upbeat attitude of the Thai people had me spellbound throughout the whole book. I laughed out loud, and I quietly cried. There aren't many books that I instantly want to read right from the start as soon as I'm finished, but this is most definitely one. Only one thing is missing. A sequel.

I was extremely honored to finally see this released in a paperback. Susan and I were in the military together and she and I shared a passion for reading and writing. Because of that, we spent the last 30 years exchanging letters. In many of her letters, she wrote about her experiences in the Peace Corps. They were fascinating then, and even more fascinating captured in her latest book. I have always encouraged her to write a book. She writes in such a humorous and captivating way. She has inspired me in many ways over the years, encouraging me to write my own memoir. After reading this and enjoying it as much as I did, I may just take her up on that challenge! I encourage everyone to read this; especially those younger readers interested in exploring our world.

If you like Dave Ramsey's Financial Advice...

Very solid advice on how to save money and live debt free.

As a fan of Dave Ramsey's books, and Financial Peace University, I'm always eager to share with others the power of personal financial management. It's something that should be taught to EVERYONE, from a young age. Sadly, our school systems don't have their act together that well just yet. I am certain that will change within another generation or so... stuff like what Ms. Stanton is teaching here will be deemed necessary and mandatory for kids to grow into productive adults in society.

For now though, it's up to us to seek out and apply this type of information.

I especially enjoyed chapter 4 (Checking your financial fitness), and chapter 6 (don't be house poor)!

While not all the suggestions will work for everyone, there's more than enough here for each reader to find and adopt potentially finance-saving measures in short order.

Don't be cheap.. but definitely DO be frugal!

Living frugal has been something I have avoided for a long time in my life, I feared living with less stuff because I thought stuff mattered. That was until I had a family member die a few months ago and I had no money to fly and go see them. Living frugal isn't about not having anything, it's about having money when you need it. Stuff is just stuff and doesn't matter in the long run. Enjoyable read and highly recommended.

I am always looking for ways to save more money, and this book was loaded with great ideas. There are tips for big picture savings, such as using less and preparing for large purchases, eating & entertainment, such as coupons, pre-preparing meals, bulk purchases, and night-in vs. night-out, health & beauty, such as using items to the last drop and avoiding name brands, financials, such as avoiding bank fees and direct deposit savings, technology, fashion and house care. The best part is that this book, unlike many "tip" guides out there, had the dirt, not just the basics.

About the Author
Wayne Staley established Affinity Systems LLC, a system consulting company, in 1997.
 
An Army veteran and military Operating Room Technician, Wayne was the NCOIC for his surgical unit. While attending college, he worked as an ER and X-Ray Technician.

Educated in computer technology, business, and manufacturing systems, he has managed Corporate Information Technology, Materials, Logistics, and manufacturing.

He was Manager of Shop Operations for a complex fabrication facility, with foundry, machine shop, metal punching and forming, annealing, aluminum die-casting/injection, metal forming, and welding. Wayne worked on integrated supply chain programs with China based suppliers, and collaboration programs with Dow Chemical, developing processes and new products. He is NAFTA certified. He served for eleven years on the City/County information processing commission, the last year as Chairperson.
He has managed numerous Business Strategy, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), and process improvement projects (VMP) in manufacturing, government, distribution, and convention management. 

He developed training materials for ERP, Supply-Chain Management, Strategy, and Process Improvement. He created Phase Four Graphics LLC, a graphic arts company, 
phasefourgraphics.com, and CompetitiveAmerica.us, advocating for American industry. A frequent speaker at APICS and AITP meetings, conferences and seminars, he is the author of six books.

He is passionate about America and driven by the need to build a better, opportunity driven world for our children and grandchildren. Success is possible by encouraging entrepreneurship, building environmentally friendly factories, and using ERP and Lean Six Sigma. Living in what his parents taught him was a demon haunted world very near total destruction was quite a challenge for a small, lonely boy. Jehovah's Witnesses taught that the battle of Armageddon would come in 1975 and that all who weren't members of their faith would perish - they also decreed that Witnesses not participate in worldly pagan celebrations such as Christmas or Easter. School and church meetings dominated his life - but his parents and other Witnesses freely acknowledged that no secular education was needed beyond learning to read and write - so other than being segregated away from school holiday celebrations school work, home work and grades were virtually ignored. Loneliness and frequent corporal punishment completed the recipe for what should have been and very nearly was a failed, angst filled life.

Very motivating

This book was a short but sweet lesson of life. It teaches that you can get what you work for IF you are willing to work for it . He took ownership of his failures and went on to rise above them. It was a good read but it left me wishing I had answers to some of the details he mentioned. I hope he will write a sequel and share some of the blanks that I am sure will be interesting.

Disclaimer: I have known Steve for about 40 years now, since we were teenagers, and was happy to hear he has shared his memoirs in this book. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, but after all these years we still maintain our friendship. One reason for this is our shared experiences of growing up in the Jehovah's Witnesses faith.

Steve starts the book by telling us about his childhood being raised in this faith and his growing doubts about its authenticity.

When Steve started fading away from "the truth," (Steve is two years older than me) I remember the very distinct fear I had that Steve was going to lose his eternal life on paradise earth and would be destroyed in the fiery judgment of Armageddon.

The basis of this fear? I had come to the determination that Steve was in imminent danger of becoming a bit too "lucky" with some lovely young lady. Think of the nunnery scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Another disclaimer: This book is only rated PG. If you want the R-rated version, you need to buy him a drink.

But I digress. Let me get back to the rest of the content of this book.

Excuses abound for why we put off doing what needs to be done to achieve success in our lives. And Steve had plenty of excuses, many of which were exceedingly legitimate. Steve shares with us the family crises he weathered and the physical and emotional health issues he endured.

Steve also shares the encouragement he had along the way, such as the immortal words of his mother, "If you've decided to be insane, why did you have so many kids?"

Well, many of us have made such "foolish decisions" in our lives...and then, by golly, we need to find a way to overcome them. Steve found a way to do this. The path wasn't pretty, clean, straight-forward, and it wasn't easy.

In all honesty, knowing Steve through the years, I often thought to myself, what the hell are you doing??

But Steve has an inner drive that has kept him going, and I admire and respect him for this.

I enjoyed the tale and the journey Steve shares with us. I hope you enjoy it too.

This would have benefited greatly from some copy editing, I found the grammatical errors to be really distracting. The pattern for the toddler hat makes no sense -- I think it's out of order because it goes from the crown decreases to casting on the ear flaps and brim. This is less a book and more a collection of blog posts and patterns.

Good Book for Advanced Knitters

This book is geared toward experienced knitters. The book is for knitters who already know basic knitting and are ready for a harder project. This book has advanced techniques and some fun advanced stitches. It also explores some fun yarn. The author explains how to use graph or chart patterns. The book then looks at Intarsia knitting which lets you use large or small blocks of color to form pictures, letters, and designs in your knitting. Intarsia knitting usually uses graphs and written out instructions to guide you through the pattern. This book is easy to read and has lots of pictures so that you can work on your technique.

Susan Wilters does a great job building further upon her knitting teachings in this book. There are so many great illustrations in this book! Susan really has a knack for giving step by step instructions that are easy to follow and easy to understand. If you feel you are at a beginner level and feel ready to move up a little higher, then this is the book for you to improve with. Susan also throws some really fun bonus stuff into this book.

Amusing storyline and colourful illustrations go a long way in engaging kids!

The book has an engaging storyline and teaches toddlers ' how to count' in a fun way. I bought this book as a gift for my niece who has just turned five years. My sister had a great time reading this book aloud to her.

The beautiful illustrations do help in keeping the kids occupied. The book is just the right thing to keep the kids interested at the same teach them something useful.

It combines educational content with fun and beautiful illustrations.

The novel by Daniel Watkins is definitely interesting, but leaves me a bit confused regarding the storyline. Several issues deal with past situations and they impact the daily lives of Emma, her girlfriend, Julie and to some extent Emma’s mother.

The relationship between Emma and her girlfriend Julia is well-developed. On the other hand, I didn’t feel that we really understand Dr. Jeremy Bantham’s character.

It’s appropriate that Julia’s escape to LA is seen as leaving for outer space !

I was so disappointed when I got to the end, don't get me wrong it war happy disappointment. I fell in love wit the characters and the intrigued. I know one thing for sure I'm no sleuth since I was all wrong

A story that covers one woman seeking a new life ...

A story that covers one woman seeking a new life and she does when she meets the woman who owns and runs the activity park. There a few red herrings to keep you intrigued and as to who is the culprit to the intimidation - that was a complete surprise. The story's themes touches of grief - past hurts, friendship and relationships.

Absolutely loved this book... it reminded me of the relationship that I have with my wife! Unbroken was the best title as well... definitely held my interest and kept me on my toes...
