Ladyboy and the Volunteer, by Susanne Aspley

Early 1990 Susan is a guileless young graduate out to save the world. Except, that doesn’t work out as planned. Nor can she hold her liquor, but not for lack of trying. In a land of five-foot-tall Thai men, her search for a Western man becomes almost as desperate as her longing for a cheeseburger. Christine, the ladyboy, is a transgender Thai prostitute who has plenty of suitors. Oblivious to her cringe-worthy curiosity about Americans, Christine shares her own world, exposing the quirks and complexities of life and love in Thailand. Together, starting in a remote fishing village filled with both lovable and annoying characters, Susan and Christine embark on adventures that lead to loud arguments, a mysterious briefcase, alluring men and bittersweet enlightenment.

Now I wish I had!
By Mary L. Doyle
I'd always thought about being a Peace Corps volunteer, but the years passed and I just never did it. After reading this, I sure wish I had. Without getting preachy, Aspley opens our eyes to raw stories of poverty, and life in a third world country. What makes it amazing is the humor with which the story is told. Aspley's memoir is so unpredictable, so funny and so filled with incredible characters I simply couldn't put it down. Her unique view of the world and the people in it help make this a thoroughly unique story, one I hope lots of people read.

One of my top ten favourite books. I'm going to cherish this for a long time.
By Alun Seymour
What can I say about The Lady Boy and the Volunteer when mere words fail me? I fell totally, completely and utterly in love with Susan and Christine in the very first chapter. Susanne Aspley's descriptions of Thailand and the upbeat attitude of the Thai people had me spellbound throughout the whole book. I laughed out loud, and I quietly cried. There aren't many books that I instantly want to read right from the start as soon as I'm finished, but this is most definitely one. Only one thing is missing. A sequel.

I was extremely honored to finally see this released in ...
By Karry Lenon
I was extremely honored to finally see this released in a paperback. Susan and I were in the military together and she and I shared a passion for reading and writing. Because of that, we spent the last 30 years exchanging letters. In many of her letters, she wrote about her experiences in the Peace Corps. They were fascinating then, and even more fascinating captured in her latest book. I have always encouraged her to write a book. She writes in such a humorous and captivating way. She has inspired me in many ways over the years, encouraging me to write my own memoir. After reading this and enjoying it as much as I did, I may just take her up on that challenge! I encourage everyone to read this; especially those younger readers interested in exploring our world.
