"You are the bravest, most fearless and skilled among the youths of this tribe."
By Grady Harp
The very handsome Jamaican author J. S. Lewis is very rapidly becoming a notable figure on the stage of new literature. His magnanimous personality flows not only through his Internet postings but also through the pages of his books. One of the first things new readers to his output (and admittedly this reviewer is one of those) are immediately drawn to is the magnetic flow of his line of developing characters and involving issues and historical references. Seamlessly he takes us on a journey - one that lasts far beyond finishing his book, so indelible are the characters he molds. He steps onto the stage of new writers with honesty, talent and aplomb.

The manner in which Lewis urges us into his story is seductive: he opens his book in Haiti with a conversation among women about the possibilities of the future, then chapter two is simply (and eloquently) love letters from 1820 between William Beckford and William Courtney, and these lead us to chapter three where we finally meet Amun, son of Gahiji, the Tribe of Amun-Ra, Guardians of the Temples of Egypt: `Bad things always happen in the night. Everything that has ever happened to our tribe- that falls under bad - happened during the night. If I said I wasn't afraid, then I would be lying. It is tribal customs for fathers to test their sons when they are of age, and the elders tests were far more difficult as they sought the next leader who will carry on and lead the tribe after they have passed. Tonight was my night. I was of age. The music, the festival, the dancing and celebrations outside had my heart drumming in my chest. Would I make it back alive?' The tension that drives this story and successfully intermingles all the preceding moments begins. The author's distillation ties it together best: `His family slaughtered, captured with his people and forced into slavery in the new world, Amun, the fearless son of the most powerful tribal chief in Egypt, Africa, is destined to lead his people out of slavery, and into freedom. Amun's spirit is mystically tried and proven, yet constantly tested, for to survive and save those he love; he must surmount his difficulties and become more than just a man, he must become Immortal. But the greatest battle Amun must face is not with his enemies, but with himself; young and confused about his sexuality, in a dark age when homosexuality is punishable by death, and for slaves . . . the fate far worst. Survival is a battle fought to the bitter end.'

This is Amun's journey into adulthood and his embracing his same sex preference in a time when such was mired in danger that J.S. Lewis tells with such deft use of language that we come to know Amun (and all the supporting cast) as though we were they - and it seems that is a driving force of Lewis, to create an historical drama that feels like a contemporary mirror. This is a work of great beauty, energy, and bravery told in a luminous fashion by an exciting new author. Grady Harp, December 14

Extremely Moving.
By Jay Mittener
Forever one to judge a book first by its cover, I was immediately drawn to the steely gaze of Amun as he appears to us with the stark, black background and the vivid yet cold blue eyes. I was delighted to find that author J.S. Lewis is incredibly talented and able to share a story with his readers that will invest them emotionally and intellectually.

Taking a page from ancient mythology is the premise of this book and the protagonist, Amun, in order to realize his full potential as a man must not only face and overcome the trials of every day man but he is also tasked with the fact that he must become immortal. We follow along with Amun as he embarks on an exciting journey towards manhood, leaving behind those he love in search of great power that will protect them in dark times to come. His character captivates us as he grows and matures before our very eyes and his pain and struggles we are able to identify with as they suddenly become our own. Towards the books breathtaking climax we find Amun at a crossroad of his destiny as he must save his people from peril and in order to do this he must not only face the opposition but the battle that rages inside himself. Amun must come to terms with his sexuality in a climate where his desires if acted upon are punishable by death.

I was also deeply moved by the side stories of characters such as Annie Palmer, William Courtney and Danny Steele, each with a groundbreaking challenge of their own that everyone is able to relate to in one way or another. The writer has something for every human being in this multi-layered story of friendship, loss, love, romance and heartbreak.

This book is moving and has a lot to say. The themes within the book are timeless and that is what makes books like these so important. It is set in the early Eighteenth Century and some of the struggles- genocide, slavery, sexual oppression, and discrimination are just as prevalent today as they were back then. The more we read, write, and talk about these topics the better life on this earth will be for all beings. I highly recommend this book for mature, open-minded audiences.

This book has it all!
By PJ Fiala
The Immortal Prince of Egypt is historical, fun, dramatic, and adventurous.
Amun belongs to a tribe in Egypt, Africa.- J.S. Lewis has a fantastic imagination is using the Transatlantic slave trade- Amun sets out on a dangerous quest, leaving behind the girl he loves, Dalilah, his best friend, Tarik, his father, Gahiji and brother, Darius.
Returning from his journey victorious, he finds that his extended absence has left the ones he loved to move on with their lives, thinking him dead. Life will never be the same for any of them.
This book has so much to offer and I am eagerly looking forward to book 2.
